Prep basketball playoff roundup: After 21-0 rally forces OT, Ogden boys fall in 3A semifinals

RICHFIELD — No. 3 Ogden High boys basketball used a 25-3 run to close the fourth quarter and force overtime, but No. 10 Judge Memorial outscored the Tigers 10-3 in bonus time for a 70-63 victory late Friday in the 3A semifinals at Sevier Valley Center.

JJ Apathjang, who led all scorers with 21 points, converted a four-point play to put Judge Memorial (13-13) up 57-34 with 6:54 left in the game — then Ogden came roaring back with 21 straight points on a continuous string of baskets and forced turnovers.

After Judge hit a jumper to break Ogden’s streak, Bingham Call converted a hook shot, then Nyiol Hauet hit a 3-pointer with 2:09 left to give the Tigers their only lead of the game at 60-59. A Bulldog free throw with 1:21 left tied the game and eventually led to overtime.

Bingham Call led Ogden with 16 points and five rebounds. Stockton Marriott tallied 14 points. Hauet added 11 points and six rebounds while Jesse Jones scored 10 points and hauled in eight boards.

The Tigers will face No. 5 Richfield (17-8) in the third-place consolation game at 3 p.m. Saturday.

LAYTON 71, COPPER HILLS 52

LAYTON — KJ Miller scored 20 points with six 3-pointers to lead No. 1 Layton High boys basketball past No. 16 Copper Hills (8-16) in the 6A second round.

Mekhi Martin tallied 17 points with two treys for Layton (23-1). Sam Romer added 15 points and David Katoa had eight.

Layton plays No. 9 Farmington (14-9) at 11:10 a.m. Monday in the quarterfinals at the University of Utah.

FARMINGTON 63, WEBER 62

PLEASANT VIEW — No. 9 Farmington outscored No. 8 Weber 14-12 in the fourth quarter for a road win in the 6A second round.

Paul Beattie led Farmington (14-9) with 20 points. Ethan Atkinson scored 16 points and Braden Larsen tallied 13. The Phoenix advanced to face Region 1 and top-seed Layton in the quarterfinals.

Hunter Schenck led all scorers with 27 points and five 3-pointers for Weber. Malachi Spencer added 12 points and Will Stratford scored seven. The Warriors end the year with a 15-9 mark.

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 61, TIMPANOGOS 46

LAYTON — No. 1 Layton Christian led 27-13 at the half in a 4A second-round win over No. 16 Timpanogos (14-11).

Alan Gballou led all scorers with 16 points for Layton Christian (23-3). Luka Kulundzic tallied 12 points and Albert Ntungicimpaye netted 10.

The Eagles will face No. 8 Murray (18-6) at 11:10 a.m. Monday in the quarterfinals at Utah Valley University.
