PLAIN CITY — In recent seasons, Fremont High girls basketball has often put teams away in the first half, with the likes of college-bound stars Emma Calvert, Timea Gardiner and Maggie Mendelson.

This year’s team does not yet have any players with scholarship secured, yet the results were eerily the same in Friday’s game against Layton.

Fremont led by 12 points after one quarter and, if the results were ever in doubt, the lead ballooned to 20 at the break.

With Fremont coach Lisa Dalebout substituting freely in the second half, the Silverwolves continued to spark and soared past the Lancers on the way to a 50-20 Region 1 rout.

“Every year we come in with the same goal; no matter what girls are on the team, we have the same mindset to win,” said senior post Syncere Langston, speaking of the Silverwolves’ approach.

The Silverwolves (9-9, 3-2 Region 1) opened the game on an 11-0 run — with Langston scoring six early points — and led 18-6 after one. Ama Herrick scored seven points and Abigail Christensen added five in the period.

“We just moved the ball well and were able to find the open player,” Langston said. “We were really good at keeping the momentum going. That’s something we’ve been working on; come out punching every quarter.”

That knockout blow came in the second quarter, which Fremont won 10-2, taking a 28-8 lead into the locker room.

Like their teams of the past, the Silverwolves were strong on the defensive end and things continued in the third quarter as Fremont held Layton (7-11, 2-3) to only four points, while scoring 18, to lead 46-12.

When the Lancers managed eight points in the final frame, it meant four dismal quarters of single digits on the board.

Roxy Casper was most of the Layton offense, scoring nine points.

“We contained them on defense and kept them from scoring,” Langston said. “We did a good job of communicating, talking the weak side and playing how we scouted them.”

Dalebout only had one starter on the court in the fourth quarter and that was freshman Olivia Surrage, for about four minutes, as the game began using a running clock –not often seen in high school basketball.

“I love cheering my team on. I just like being part of the team and doing what I can, and if that’s cheering from the bench, it’s cheering from the bench,” Langston said.

Langston scored 15 points for Fremont, with four field goals and a 7-of-9 mark from the free-throw line. Herrick had 12, including a pair of 3-pointers.

“We’ve been focusing on finishing; we work hard in practice on free throws and converting them in the game,” Langston said.
