Ogden club water polo team wins state championship

Ogden City’s 18U water polo team won the Division 2 state championship as a club team in the Utah Water Polo Association, defeating Southern Utah Water Polo 15-13 in a championship match held May 18 at Olympus High School.

Ogden City Water Polo’s team is comprised of students from Ogden and Weber school districts.

Ogden trailed by as much as 8-4 in the third quarter and outscored SUWP 7-3 in the fourth quarter for a comeback victory.

James Peterson scored seven goals to lead the Ogden team. Sawyer Davis netted four, Luke Ritter had two, and Wesley Craven and Giancarlos Hogge each scored once.

Davis broke a 13-13 tie in the fourth with two goals, and Lewi Hogge was credited with strong play in goal to hold the lead in the final minutes.

The team’s coach, Trevor Schuurman, won coach of the year in the state. Peterson was the All-State MVP in Division 2. Craven, Lewi Hogge, and Zayden Helco were named to the All-State First Team.
