Prep roundup: Morgan rallies to take 3A state baseball series

MORGAN — No. 5 Morgan High baseball scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead on the way to a 6-3 win Friday evening, claiming Game 3 and its 3A Super Regionals series 2-1 over No. 12 Summit Academy (9-14).

Brigham Spens paced Morgan (19-8) with a triple, a double and two runs scored. Ryder Waldron pitched a complete game with seven hits, two earned runs and five strikeouts in the win. Beck Sheffield batted 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.

The Trojans advance to double-elimination bracket play with a game at 7 p.m. Monday, May 6, at Kearns High School against No. 4 Canyon View (17-9-1).

MORGAN 12, SUMMIT ACADEMY 1

MORGAN — Morgan pitchers allowed three hits in five innings to answer a blowout loss Thursday with a run-rule victory Friday afternoon in Game 2 of the series to force a decisive Game 3.

Tryker Jones hit 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. George Jensen and Brigham Spens each drove in three runs. Camron Talbot allowed one earned run, pitching around seven walks by allowing three hits in 4 1/3 innings. Ryker Moser recorded the final two outs to end the game in the top of the fifth.

UNION 15, OGDEN 4

ROOSEVELT — No. 7 Union (17-10) answered three runs from No. 10 Ogden in the fourth inning with seven more of its own to eliminate the Tigers via run-rule, claiming a 2-0 series win in the 3A state playoffs.

Carter Rasmussen hit 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored for Ogden (9-14). Kale Adams, Easton Green and Diego DeLeon each drove in one run.

DAVIS 13, WEBER 3

KAYSVILLE — Kaleb Weaver batted 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, and earned the win on the mound with eight strikeouts while allowing one earned run on four hits over four innings, to lead Davis to a series sweep over Weber in a five-inning game.

Wally Grant batted 3 for 4 and scored two runs for Davis (17-5, 9-3 Region 1). Max Hunter went 2 for 3 and drove in two. Seth Jarman hit a two-run double.

Dax Rhees batted 2 for 2 and drove in all three Weber (7-15, 3-9) runs. Ashton Burnett hit a double and scored two runs.

BOX ELDER 7, CLEARFIELD 4

BRIGHAM CITY — Ryan Griffin batted 3 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs to lead Box Elder past Clearfield.

KJ Argyle and Landon Golman each batted 2 for 3 for Box Elder (11-11, 6-6 Region 5) with a double and combined for three RBIs. Ashton Burton hit an RBI double. Golman earned the win with six hits, three earned runs and four strikeouts.

Hudson Meyer hit two doubles and drove in one for Clearfield (11-12, 7-5). Taven Swartz, Peyton Kotter and Colt Chambers each hit two singles.

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Box Elder stayed atop the Region 5 standings with a shutout of Bonneville (7-6, 7-6 Region 5).

Landon Lloyd and Nasch Palmer each netted twice for Box Elder (10-3, 10-3), with Palmer adding two assists. Luke Jeppesen scored one goal.

ROY 2, VIEWMONT 0

ROY — Boston Risk netted in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and send Roy to a region win over Viewmont (7-6, 7-6 Region 5), keeping the Royals step for step with Box Elder atop Region 5 with one game remaining.

David Rangel scored in the first half for Roy (10-3, 10-3). Hunter Patterson tallied one assist.

FREMONT 4, WEBER 1

PLAIN CITY — Fremont scored three goals after halftime to break a 1-1 tie in a region win over

Payton Clark scored a brace and had one assist for Fremont (9-5, 7-3 Region 1). Ryker Saunders also netted two goals.

PLAIN CITY — Savannah Palmatier batted 2 for 3 and scored one run as Fremont fell at home to Riverton in a non-region battle of the Silverwolves.

Kacie Howard, Audrey Cooper and Rylee Andreasen each got a hit for Fremont (9-5).
