3A softball playoffs: Morgan advances, Ogden and Ben Lomond eliminated

MORGAN 4, RICHFIELD 3

MORGAN — Eva Birkeland threw five one-hit, scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win, and batted 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs, as No. 4 Morgan High softball edged No. 13 Richfield (5-17) to open the 3A state tournament Saturday afternoon.

Birkeland struck out seven and walked three for Morgan (17-8). Lexi Hardman batted 2 for 3 and scored a run from the leadoff spot. Kaiya Peterson hit 2 for 3.

Morgan next faces No. 5 Carbon (18-10) at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 9, at the Spanish Fork Softball Complex. The double-elimination bracket plays out May 9-11.

UNION 9, OGDEN 6

KAMAS — No. 14 Ogden had the game knotted 6-6 after two innings but couldn’t manage more runs against opposing pitcher Haylee Moynier, who struck out 13 and allowed three hits in seven innnigs, and the Tigers’ season ended in a 3A elimination game against No. 11 Union (10-15) on Saturday evening at South Summit High School.

Ogden (5-16) did not report stats for Saturday’s final game.

SOUTH SUMMIT 12, OGDEN 0

KAMAS — No. 14 Ogden totaled just two hits in a five-inning loss to No. 3 South Summit (18-6) in the first round of the 3A playoffs Saturday afternoon.

Bridgette Powell doubled and Stephanie Robles singled for Ogden’s hits.

OGDEN 15, SUMMIT ACADEMY 0

KAMAS — No. 14 Ogden needed three innings to run-rule No. 19 Summit Academy (0-15) in a 3A play-in game Saturday morning, advancing into the double-elimination bracket.

Aracely DeLeon doubled twice for Ogden. Bridgette Powell and Isabella Rounkles each drove in three runs. Abby Thompson faced one over the minimum, walking one and striking out five, in the circle.

AM. LEADERSHIP 18, BEN LOMOND 8

CASTLE DALE — No. 17 Ben Lomond had the score 9-8 after three innings but No. 16 American Leadership Academy (5-9) pulled away for a five-inning, run-rule victory in a 3A play-in game Saturday morning at Emery High School.

Ben Lomond (3-14) did not report stats.
