Prep roundup: Morgan stays alive in 3A baseball tournament; Ferneau wins No. 300 at Layton

PROVO — No. 5 Morgan High baseball scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead, then held off a No. 1 Grantsville (20-4) rally to advance 7-5 in a 3A elimination game Tuesday evening at BYU.

George Jensen hit a two-run single for Morgan (20-9). Camron Talbot, Benjamin Hardin and Tryker Jones each hit an RBI single. Talbot earned the win with three hits, one earned run, eight walks and four strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.

Morgan plays another elimination game at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kearns High School, facing the loser of a game between No. 4 Canyon View and No. 8 Emery, which began late Tuesday night.

CANYON VIEW 3, MORGAN 1

PROVO — No. 5 Morgan came up short in a pitchers’ duel against No. 4 Canyon View to open 3A double-elimination bracket play Monday night in a game played at BYU.

Beck Sheffield pitched six strong innings for Morgan, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, striking out three and walking zero. But Zac Millett gave up just one unearned run on four hits for Canyon View (18-9-1), striking out eight and walking two.

Camron Talbot, Brigham Spens, George Jensen and Tryker Jones each singled for Morgan.

LAYTON 11, FREMONT 5

PLAIN CITY — Fish Manning batted 3 for 5 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored to lead Layton past Fremont on Tuesday.

Talon Hansen and Tanner Neil each hit two singles for Layton (12-10, 5-8 Region 1), with Hansen driving in four and Neil two. Eli Andertson hit a two-run single. Garrison Garton pitched six innings with seven hits, five earned runs and five strikeouts.

The win is Robert Ferneau’s 300th as head coach, according to the school, making him the ninth baseball coach in Utah history to reach the milestone.

Garet Jones hit a two-run double for Fremont (15-8, 8-5). Max Johnson batted 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Grady Garrett had two hits and Anthony Marziale hit an RBI single.

SOFTBALL

LAYTON 2, FARMINGTON1

LAYTON — Ryley Jaques batted 2 for 3 to lead Layton past Farmington for the Lancers’ first region win on the season.

Olivia Clark hit an RBI single and Macie Clark doubled for Layton (3-17, 1-9 Region 1). Lauren Hansen earned the win with five hits, one earned run, three walks and nine strikeouts in a complete game.

Kiley Gazafy hit an RBI double for Farmington (8-9, 4-5). Ella Nielson added a double. Madison Kelker hit a single and gave up six hits with three strikeouts in the hard-luck loss.

BOYS SOCCER

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 3, PARK CITY 0

PARK CITY — Tito Souza kept a clean sheet as Layton Christian posted a shutout Monday at Park City to clinch the Region 10 title outright.

Felipe Rocha netted in the first half for Layton Christian (13-1, 9-1 Region 10). Joao Gabriel Silva and Rafael Furlani each scored after the break. Theo Villela, Joaquim Diniz and Yan Simas each had an assist.
