Prep roundup: Morgan baseball wins 2 more; Clearfield softball takes 2 in 2 cities

WEST JORDAN — No. 5 Morgan High baseball scored five runs in the sixth inning to defeat No. 4 Canyon View (19-9-1) by an 8-1 score Wednesday night in the 3A state tournament at Salt Lake Community College.

George Jensen batted 2 for 4 and scored once for Morgan (22-9). Beck Sheffield, Luke Bauerle and Ben Harden each hit a single and drove in two. Camron Talbot and Kanyon Leonelli each had one hit, one base on balls, one RBI and scored two runs. The Trojans had nine hits and no errors, and drew eight walks.

Brigham Spens earned the win in 6 1/3 innings of work and was removed due to pitch-count restrictions. Spens allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out one while pitching around five walks.

Morgan’s win forces the if-necessary game for the double-elimination portion of the tournament. The two teams will play again, scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at SLCC. The winner advances to the three-game state championship series Friday and Saturday against Manti or Union, also at SLCC.

MORGAN 6, EMERY 5

WEST JORDAN — Trailing 5-3 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and the bases loaded, sophomore Luke Bauerle roped a double off the glove of the diving Emery centerfielder and No. 5 Morgan rallied for a walk-off victory Wednesday afternoon when Ryder Waldron scored from first on the play to keep the Trojans alive in the 3A tournament.

Morgan (21-9) trailed 5-0 after five innings but eliminated No. 8 Emery (17-13) with the comeback. Beck Sheffiled batted 3 for 3 and scored a run. Bauerle hit 2 for 4 with the three-run double. Waldron batted 1 for 1, drew one walk and scored two runs. Ben Harden went 2 for 3 with a double and drove in two.

Ryker Moser earned the win, allowing one hit in one inning of relief. Waldron ended the game on the basepaths and started the game on the mound, giving up four hits and three runs, zero earned, over 3 2/3 innings.

DAVIS 8, FARMINGTON 3

KAYSVILLE — Owen Talbot batted 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored as Davis stayed in first place with a win at Farmington.

Seth Jarman hit a two-run double for Davis (18-5, 10-3 Region 1). Carter Garrett had two hits. Carter Knight hit an RBI single and Max Hunter drove in two on sacrifice flies. Andrew Filimoehala got the win with three hits, four strikeouts and five walks over four innings.

Jaxon Ball and Max Pearson each drove in one for Farmington (9-14, 6-7). Caleb Hadley, Gage Farr, Easton Wight and Austin Rees each singled.

LAYTON 2, FREMONT 0

LAYTON — Fish Manning pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits and striking out four, as Layton bested Fremont.

Emilio Cedeno hit a double and scored a run for Layton (13-10, 6-8 Region 1). Eli Anderson and Talon Hansen each hit an RBI single. Tanner Neil had a hit and scored a run.

Garet Jones, Max Johnson, Owen Simkins and Anthony Marziale each hit a single for Fremont (15-9, 8-6). Brant Koford took the hard-luck loss with five hits, one earned run and one strikeout in a complete game.

SYRACUSE 4, WEBER 2

SYRACUSE — Tatum Martin and Tag Hamblin each batted 2 for 3, with Hamblin driving in one and Martin scoring once, as Syracuse downed Weber.

Bodee Jensen hit an RBI single for Syracuse (11-11-1, 7-6 Region 1). Dallin Michalson and Austin Burton each hit a single. Jaden Keblis earned the win with three hits, two earned runs and three strikeouts over five innings.

Jarett Hill hit an RBI single for Weber (7-16, 3-10). Tyce Abbott and Ashton Burnett each hit a single.

CLEARFIELD 2, NORTHRIDGE 0

CLEARFIELD — Peyton Kotter tossed a three-hit shutout, with one walk and nine strikeouts, as Clearfield downed Northridge.

Ryan Frei batted 2 for 3 with two doubles and drove in both Clearfield (12-12, 8-5 Region 5) runs in the second inning. Kaden Coleman had the other Clearfield hit.

Tytan Redd hit a double for Northridge (11-12, 3-10). Bentley Whitear and Jon Olsen each hit a single.

BOX ELDER 6, BONNEVILLE 0

BRIGHAM CITY — Ryan Griffin batted 2 for 3 and scored two runs and earned the win on the bump to lead Box Elder to a one-hit shutout of Bonneville.

KJ Argyle hit an RBI triple for Box Elder (12-12, 7-5 Region 5) and Landon Golman hit a two-run double. Damon Rodriguez and Ashton Burton each hit an RBI single. Griffin (two innings), Judd Howels (three innings) and Rodriguez combined for one hit, two walks and 13 strikeouts on the mound.

Andrew Hansen hit a single for Bonneville (9-14, 2-11).

ROY 6, VIEWMONT 5

BOUNTIFUL — Roy scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning for a comeback win at Viewmont (17-5, 11-2 Region 5).

Cameron Baty batted 3 for 4 and drove in two for Roy (6-18, 5-8). Jack Sorensen went 2 for 2, drove in two and scored two runs. Bryce Bagby hit a two-run single. Parker Skidmore pitched a complete game with four hits, three earned runs and two strikeouts.

CLEARFIELD 17, NORTHRIDGE 6

LAYTON — Jenna Lloyd batted 4 for 5 with a triple and two RBIs, and pitched a five-inning complete game with seven hits, five earned runs and five strikeouts, to lead Clearfield to a region win at Northridge.

Aly Ridge batted 2 for 4 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and three runs scored for Clearfield (10-13, 6-7 Region 5). Rylee Kirk and Brynn Nicholls each had hit a home run, a single, and drove in two. Lilly Lara hit an RBI double.

Jaden Anderson batted 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for Northridge (5-14, 4-9). Kaylee Shirreffs hit a two-run single.

CLEARFIELD 14, VIEWMONT 1

BOUNTIFUL — After winning at Northridge, Clearfield boarded the bus to Bountiful and grabbed a five-inning win at Viewmont (8-13, 6-8 Region 5) to complete the sweep in an unconventional doubleheader.

Freshman Brynn Nicholls batted 2 for 2 with one walk, one hit-by-pitch, one grand slam, one three-run homer, nine RBIs and two runs scored for Clearfield (11-13, 7-7 Region 5).

Jenna Lloyd worked her magic again, allowing three hits and one earned run with three walks and five strikeouts over five innings, and batting 1 for 3 with two runs scored. Elizabeth Salazar went 2 for 2 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Aly Ridge hit two singles and drove in two.

BOX ELDER 17, WOODS CROSS 2

WOODS CROSS — Stevie Checketts batted 2 for 3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored as Box Elder won in three innings at Woods Cross (2-17, 0-14 Region 5).

Alexis Hales batted 2 for 2 with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored for Box Elder (20-4, 12-2). Justy Prichard batted 2 for 3 with a double and drove in three. Paige Baker hit a two-run single. Lucy Braegger gave up three hits and zero earned runs with seven strikeouts in three innings.

BOUNTIFUL 8, BONNEVILLE 2

BOUNTIFUL — Bonneville scored two runs in the sixth inning as the Lakers fell at Bountiful (23-3, 13-1 Region 5), where the RedHawks clinched the Region 5 championship.

Morgan Rich hit an RBI single for Bonneville (16-5, 10-4). Shelbee Johnson drove in the other run. Aya Larson, Kaylee McAfee, Annie Stevenson and Baylee Andreasen each singled for the Lakers, who struck out 14 times on the afternoon.

FARMINGTON 20, GRANGER 4

FARMINGTON — Lexi Crowley hit two home runs and drove in five for Farmington (9-9) in a non-region win.

Morgan Rogers batted 2 for 4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs. Madison Kelker and Hannah Bartyon each hit a two-run home run. Ruby Andrus hit an RBI triple and Ryann Bennion added a triple. Nev Carrasquel hit an RBI double. Ella Nielson earned the win with three hits, two earned runs and one strikeout over three innings.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

SYRACUSE 3, ROY 0

ROY — Syracuse won at Roy 25-14, 25-11, 25-10 in a non-region match.

Chase Barrett paced Syracuse (21-7) with 10 kills and four aces. Davis Caldwell added nine kills. Branson Hamblin served four aces and posted 13 digs. Joshua Godfrey had eight kills and two blocks while Caleb Roskelley amassed 26 assists.

Dahlen Pontius and Braxton Harrison each had four kills for Roy (6-19). Finn Nakasone tallied 12 assists. Ethan Casper posted five blocks and Kael Miller had 11 digs.

ROY 3, NORTHRIDGE 0

ROY — Roy swept Northridge 25-22, 25-15, 25-17 on Tuesday.

Isaac Burnett paced Roy (6-18, 32-11 Region 5) with 11 kills and two blocks. Finn Nakasone dished out 22 assists and Ty Sandevol tallied 22 digs.

Northridge (1-13, 1-13) did not report stats.
