Prep roundup: Weber baseball wins series opener; Farmington tennis has two title winners

PLEASANT VIEW -- No. 16 Weber High baseball rallied from an 8-0 deficit with four runs in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth to win Game 1 of a 6A first-round playoff series by a 9-8 score Saturday against No. 17 Herriman (2-24).

D Rhees batted 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs to lead Weber (8-18) at the plate. After G Clark surrendered eight runs, but only two earned, in one-plus inning of work, M Schmitt gave up zero runs on three hits, striking out five while pitching around seven walks, in six innings for the win.

Schmitt was also 2 for 2 with two runs scored at the plate.

The series concludes Monday.

CLEARFIELD 3, NORTHRIDGE 1

CLEARFIELD -- Ryan Frei and Taven Swartz combined to strike out nine and hold No. 18 Northridge to one run as No. 15 Clearfield took Game 1 of a 6A first-round playoff series.

Colt Chambers led Clearfield (13-13) with a hit and two RBIs. Jake Ross hit 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Jon Olsen threw a complete game, striking out 10, walking two and allowing zero earned runs in the loss for Northridge (12-13). Jameson Charles drove in the run and five Knights tallied one single each.

SPANISH FORK 9, BONNEVILLE 3

SPANISH FORK -- No. 11 Spanish Fork (13-13) scored five runs in the first inning and No. 22 Bonneville could not recover in Game 1 of a 5A first-round playoff series.

Parker Sorensen drove in two runs for Bonneville (9-16). Jaxon Hymas doubled and drove in one.

Cedar Valley 8, Box Elder 3 (5A first round)

SOFTBALL

WEST 7, ROY 2

SALT LAKE CITY -- No. 12 West (10-7) broke open a close contest with a five-run fifth to take Game 1 of a 5A first-round playoff series against No. 21 Roy.

Mylee Gard hit 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for Roy (5-18). Quincy Johnson batted 2 for 2 and scored a run.

The series concludes Monday.

WASATCH 3, CLEARFIELD 0

CLEARFIELD -- Jenna Lloyd struck out 13 batters for No. 14 Clearfield but took the hard-luck loss in a low-scoring battle with No. 19 Wasatch (6-19) in Game 1 of a 5A first-round playoff series.

Lloyd, Addyson Haddock, Brynn Nichols and Elizabeth Salazar each hit singles for Clearfield (11-14).

MAPLE MTN 12, NORTHRIDGE 0

SPANISH FORK -- Kyla Donegan pitched a one-hit shutout for No. 11 Maple Mountain (10-13) to beat No. 22 Northridge in Game 1 of a 5A first-round playoff series.

Ellie Martinez tallied the hit for Northridge (5-16), a double. Kaydence Chournos drew two walks.

BOYS TENNIS

FARMINGTON HAS TWO TITLE WINNERS

SALT LAKE CITY -- Farmington High School had two individual singles state champions at the 6A tournament held Thursday and Saturday at Liberty Park.

Farmington junior Justin Steed topped Lone Peak's Tate Squires 6-0, 6-0 in the second singles final Saturday. Junior Nathaniel Bullard won the third singles championship 6-0, 6-2 over Lone Peak's Cache Garner.

Farmington's Charles Frey also reached the final in first singles but fell 6-4, 6-2 to Skyridge's Calvin Armstrong.

In 6A first doubles, Davis High seniors Will Parkinson and Scott Finlinson advanced to the semifinals. In second doubles, Farmington's Jacob Stone and Blake Geddes reached the semis.
