Prep roundup: Landen Golmon throws no-hitter for Box Elder baseball to win series

BRIGHAM CITY -- Landen Golmon threw a no-hitter to lead No. 14 Box Elder High baseball to a 1-0 win in Game 3 of a 5A first-round series against No. 19 Cedar Valley (10-18) on Monday evening to win the series 2-1.

Golmon struck out five, walked one and hit two batters for Box Elder (15-13). KJ Argyle led off the game getting hit by a pitch and came around to score, and Golmon and the Bees made that run stand up. Box Elder rapped just four singles after the Game 2 barrage earlier in the day.

Box Elder advances to a second-round series against No. 3 Viewmont (18-5) on Thursday and Friday.

BOX ELDER 7, CEDAR VALLEY 4

BRIGHAM CITY -- Ryan Griffin homered twice, driving in three, on Monday afternoon as Box Elder forced a decisive Game 3.

KJ Argyle threw a complete game for Box Elder (15-13), allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out five and walking three.

Griffin's two homers led a Bees barrage in which eight of their nine hits went for extra bases -- Argyle, Landen Golmon, Ashton Burton, Damon Rodriguez, Kelton Reyes and Maddox Earnest each hit one double. Earnest drove in two runs.

WEBER 10, HERRIMAN 7

PLEASANT VIEW -- No. 16 Weber scored three runs in the first inning to set up a win over No. 17 Herriman (2-25) and sweep their 6A first-round series 2-0.

Jarett Hill hit 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs for Weber (9-18). Dax Rhees hit 3 for 3 with three runs scored, and picked up the win on the mound by allowing three runs on three hits over five innings. Ashton Burnett hit two doubles.

Weber advances to a second-round series against No. 1 American Fork (19-6) on Thursday and Friday.

FARMINGTON 6, WESTLAKE 1

FARMINGTON -- No. 15 Farmington broke open a close game with six runs in the fifth inning for a 2-0 sweep in its 6A first-round series against No. 18 Westlake (2-25).

Jaxon Ball tripled and Max Pearson doubled for Farmington (11-16). Austin Rees spread seven hits and one earned run across 5 2/3 innings and Josh Hecht threw 1 1/3 innings of shutdown relief.

Farmington next plays at No. 2 Davis in the second round Thursday and Friday.

SPANISH FORK 10, BONNEVILLE 0

SPANISH FORK -- Riley Lambson threw a three-hit shutout in five innings as No. 11 Spanish Fork (14-13) eliminated No. 22 Bonneville 2-0 in a 5A first-round series.

Jet Hirschi, Andrew Hansen and Wade Larsen tallied singles for Bonneville (9-17).

DESERT HILLS LEADS BEAR RIVER

WEST JORDAN -- In 4A double-elimination bracket play at Salt Lake Community College, No. 4 Desert Hills hit a three-run homer to lead No. 5 Bear River 8-5 through five innings when the game was put under lightning delay in the top of the sixth just after 9 p.m.

It was unknown at press time if the game would resume Monday night, Tuesday morning or be considered a complete result if it couldn't be completed Monday.

The loser plays No. 8 Ridgeline at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in an elimination game. The Winner plays No. 1 Dixie at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

WEST 13, ROY 12 (8)

SALT LAKE CITY -- No. 21 Roy battled back from an early 6-0 deficit to get the game to extra innings tied 11-11, scored in the top of the eighth, but lost in walk-off fashion when No. 12 West (11-7) plated two in the bottom of the eighth to eliminate the Royals and win the 5A first-round series 2-0.

Aviee Gomez hit 2 for 5 with a double and four RBIs for Roy (5-19). Addison Gibby doubled and scored three runs. Kylee Weitzel and Izabel Cline each drove in two.

WASATCH 3, CLEARFIELD 0

CLEARFIELD -- No. 14 Clearfield lost Monday in near identical fashion as it did Saturday to fall 2-0 in a 6A first-round playoff series against No. 19 Wasatch (6-20).

As in Saturday's 3-0 loss, Clearfield (11-15) totaled four singles Monday with Addyson Haddock, Brynn Nicholls, Natalie Brierley and Elizabeth Salazar tallying one hit apiece. Jenna Lloyd took another tough loss, allowing two earned runs on three hits, striking out nine and walking three.
