Prep playoff roundup: Golmon aces again for Box Elder baseball; Roy soccer upsets East

BOUNTIFUL -- Four days after tossing a Game 3 no-hitter in the first round, Landen Golmon pitched a complete-game one-hitter as No. 14 Box Elder High baseball won Game 3 against No. 3 Viewmont by a 10-0 score to claim a 5A second-round series upset Friday evening over the Region 5 champs.

Golmon also batted 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs for Box Elder (17-14). Ryan Griffin hit 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Ashton Burton went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Maddox Earnest went 3 for 4 and drove in one. Damon Rodriguez hit a double and a single and drove in one. Camden Lish added a double.

The Bees advance to bracket play where they will face No. 6 Salem Hills (18-9) at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Utah Valley University.

BOX ELDER 6, VIEWMONT 4

BOUNTIFUL -- Ryan Griffin hit a three-run home run to help No. 14 Box Elder beat No. 3 Viewmont in Game 2 on Friday afternoon to force a Game 3.

Landen Golmon batted 2 for 4 with a double for Box Elder. Camden Lish hit an RBI triple. Kellen Kohler and Kelton Reyes each had two hits. KJ Argyle batted 1 for 2 and pitched four innings with three hits and one earned run in the win.

FREMONT 5, PLEASANT GROVE 2

PLAIN CITY -- Anthony Marziale batted 3 for 3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead No. 6 Fremont to a 6A second-round sweep of No. 11 Pleasant Grove (14-13).

Garet Jones batted 2 for 3 and drove in one for Fremont (18-9). Grady Garrett had one hit and two RBIs. Hayden Hudman got the win with three hits, zero runs and six strikeouts over five innings.

The Silverwolves advance to bracket play where they will face No. 3 Mountain Ridge (20-7) at 1:30 p.m. Monday at BYU.

SYRACUSE 6, BINGHAM 3

SYRACUSE -- Carson Miles batted 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs as No. 8 Syracuse eliminated No. 9 Bingham (14-13) in a 6A second-round sweep.

Dawson Raymond hit a double for Syracuse (15-11-1). Tag Hamblin, Austin Burton and Tatum Martin each hit a single. Dom Johnatakis got the win with three hits, one earned run and six strikeouts over six innings.

The Titans will face No. 1 American Fork (21-6) in bracket play at 4:30 p.m. Monday at BYU.

DAVIS 13, SYRACUSE 12

KAYSVILLE -- No. 5 Davis scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh in a walk-off win over No. 12 Syracuse to sweep their 6A first-round series.

Lauryn Hall batted 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, two walks, three RBIs and three runs scored for Davis (18-5). Katie Klaumann went 2 for 5 and drove in three. Cambell Christensen hit an RBI double and earned the win with 10 hits and five earned runs in four innings.

Eryn Hamblin batted 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs for Syracuse (9-12). Olivia Brown went 2 for 4 with a double and drove in two. Jazmine Prathan hit a single and a double.

Davis advances to double-elimination bracket play and will face No. 4 Pleasant Grove (21-6) at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Valley Softball Complex in Taylorsville.

FREMONT 15, WEBER 4

PLAIN CITY -- Ivee Johnsen homered and totaled five RBIs, and pitched all five innings with six hits, four earned runs and seven strikeouts as No. 7 Fremont completed a 6A first-round sweep of No. 10 Weber.

Jessica Broadbent batted 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs for Fremont (12-5). Savannah Palmatier batted 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Rylee Andreasen hit three singles and drove in one.

Ellie Nielsen batted 3 for 3 with two home runs for Weber (10-13). Isabella Bird and Raegan Blaisdell each hit a single.

Fremont advances to bracket play and will face No. 2 Herriman (20-4) at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Valley Softball Complex in Taylorsville.

BOX ELDER 13, CEDAR VALLEY 12

BRIGHAM CITY -- No. 4 Box Elder scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a walk-off win and a 5A first-round series sweep of No. 13 Cedar Valley (13-15).

Kennadie Blackmer batted 3 for 3 with a home run, a double and seven RBIs for Box Elder (22-4). Alexis Hales hit a two-run single and Brooke Richards hit an RBI single. Kellie Malan hit a double and earned the win with one hit, two runs and one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

The Bees will face No. 5 Taylorsville (16-5) in bracket play at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Taylorsville.

OLYMPUS 6, BONNEVILLE 5 (8)

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- No. 7 Bonneville left the potential tying run on base in an extra-inning loss to No. 10 Olympus (18-8) to lose its 5A first-round series.

Kaylee McAfee batted 3 for 5 with a solo home run and a double for Bonneville (16-7). Marley Chournos hit a two-run home run. Ellee Summers went 2 for 4 and drove in one while Morgan Rich hit a double.

ROY 3, EAST 1

SALT LAKE CITY -- No. 7 Roy spotted No. 2 East (13-3) a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute, then scored three unanswered goals to grab an upset road win in the 5A quarterfinals Friday evening.

Bronson Belnap scored the equalizer in the 12th minute on an Aidan Hart assist for Roy (13-3). Brayden Buttars netted the game-winner on a Hart assist in the 48th minute. Boston Risk added an insurance goal in the 56th minute on a Colby Frokjer assist.

The Royals advance to the 5A semifinals to face No. 3 Salem Hills (14-2) at 2:15 p.m. Monday at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman.

- BOYS VOLLEYBALL -

SYRACUSE 3, WESTLAKE 1

OREM -- No. 7 Syracuse downed No. 2 Westlake (16-4) in four sets in the 6A quarterfinals. Set scores were 25-15, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19 at Utah Valley University late Thursday.

Davis Caldwell tallied 22 kills and two aces for Syracuse (23-7). Chase Barrett added 10 kills and 18 digs. Josh Godfrey and Caleb Roskelley each had one block while Roskelly dished out 45 assists.

The Titans will face No. 3 Pleasant Grove (25-5) in the 6A semifinals at 9 am Saturday. The third/fourth-place game follows at 1:30 p.m. for the loser with the winner scheduled for the state title match at 6:30 p.m.
