Prep playoff roundup: Fremont baseball upsets Mountain Ridge to open bracket play
PROVO — Anthony Marziale batted 3 for 4 with a double, and earned the win on the mound by allowing three earned runs over four innings, as No. 6 Fremont downed No. 3 Mountain Ridge (20-7) by an 8-4 score Monday afternoon in 6A bracket play at Brigham Young University.
Tyson Grieve and Grady Garrett both had one hit and two RBIs for Fremont (18-9). Marziale allowed four hits, struck out four and walked five in his appearance. Jace Hadley, Karsten Jamison, Max Johnson and Grady Garrett each drove in one.
The Silverwolves face No. 10 Corner Canyon (17-11) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at BYU.
CORNER CANYON 8, DAVIS 6
PROVO — No. 2 Davis gave up six runs in the sixth inning in an upset loss to No. 10 Corner Canyon (17-11) in 6A bracket play at BYU.
Jaxon Marble hit an RBI triple for Davis (22-6). Carter Knight batted 2 for 3 and drove in one. Wyatt Horning hit an RBI double.
The Darts will face No. 3 Mountain Ridge (20-7) at 11 a.m. Tuesday in an elimination game at BYU.
AMERICAN FORK 3, SYRACUSE 0
PROVO — Tag Hamblin got the only hit for No. 8 Syracuse in a 6A bracket play loss to No. 1 American Fork (22-6) at BYU.
Jake Hopkins took the hard-luck loss in a complete game for Syracuse (15-12-1), allowing two earned runs on six hits, striking out two and walking three.
The Titans face the loser of Monday’s nightcap between No. 5 Lehi (18-9) and No. 4 Riverton (20-7) in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at BYU.
SALEM HILLS 12, BOX ELDER 4
OREM — Landon Golman hit a two-run triple in the first inning to give No. 14 Box Elder a short-lived 3-0 lead in a 5A bracket play loss to No. 6 Salem Hills (19-9) at Utah Valley University.
Ryan Griffin batted 3 for 3 and scored two runs for Box Elder (17-15). Ashton Burton had two hits and drove in one. Maddox Earnest hit an RBI single.
The Bees will face No. 7 Murray (21-5) at 11 a.m. Tuesday at UVU in a 5A elimination game.
BOYS TENNIS
OGDEN TAKES 3RD AT STATE TENNIS
SALT LAKE CITY — Ogden High boys tennis took third place in the 3A state tournament that concluded Saturday at Liberty Park.
Ogden senior John Winn played for the third singles title where he fell to Rowland Hall’s Andrew Murphy 6-3, 6-3. Winn rallied to defeat Waterford’s Rowan Hodell 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Saturday morning to reach the final.
Senior Spencer Reeves and freshman Samuel Ondrus played in the second doubles final for Ogden, falling to a Rowland Hall team 6-4, 7-5. Reeves and Ondrus defeated a Waterford team 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals.
Spencer Christensen reached the semifinals in first singles, and Gavin Holliday and Jacob Sheffield fell Saturday in the first doubles semifinals.
Rowland Hall won the 3A team title and Waterford was second.
