Girls soccer: Maudsley helps Davis put away Layton, clinch Region 1 share

By BOB JUDSON - Special to the Standard-Examiner | Oct 1, 2024

KAYSVILLE — Davis forward Sammy Maudsley is only a sophomore, so she will have many more matches against Layton in her high school career. But the Lancers have seen enough of her this season.

Last month, Maudsley scored the winning goal on penalty kicks against the Lancers. Tuesday, she broke a halftime tie and the Darts never looked back.

The Darts clinched at least a share of the Region 1 title with a 5-2 victory over Layton, sweeping the season series.

Tied 1-1 at the break, Maudsley quickly put the Darts up 2-1 only five minutes into the second half.

“(Davis coach Dillon Richens) actually got after me a little bit and said I needed to make an impact on the field, so I went out and gave 110% so I could score,” Maudsley said. “He said we needed to come out with more energy and more intensity, win our 50-50 balls and play our game.”

Maudsley raced down the left sideline and crossed to the middle where teammate Brooklyn Phongsavath (newly committed to Weber State) found her for an assist.

“I made a run behind the defense, split the center back and left back, cut it back and shot with my left foot in the top corner,” Maudsley said.

That goal opened the floodgates for the Darts, who scored three more times over the next 30 minutes to take a commanding 5-1 lead.

“Our momentum is really good, especially with this team,” Maudsley said. “Once we get one goal, our level of energy is so high, we want to keep scoring.”

Perhaps the most impressive goal was No. 3 for the Darts, where Simone Packer simply overpowered Layton keeper Quincy Reisbeck with a free kick from beyond the penalty box.

“It was just outside the 18 (yard mark). Honestly, I just hit it hard enough and hopefully it would go in,” Packer said. “I tried to keep it on frame and hit it as hard as I can.”

Reisbeck initially blocked the kick, stumbled slightly backward, and the ball bounced over her shoulder into the net.

“It felt good. Even though we were up 2-1, it’s still a close game, so we’ve got to get one more to make it a more comfortable game, especially if you want to get region. Got to lock it; get the big win,” Packer said.

Three minutes later, Reial Phongsavath made it 4-1 on a Courtney Burbidge assist in the 60th minute.

Maudsley then recorded a brace, assisted by Jentry Gardner, with her second goal of the game and Davis (13-3, 8-1 Region 1) had the big 5-1 bulge.

“It was a through ball behind the defense; the goalie was outside and I looked up and hit it hard in the top corner,” Maudsley said.

Layton (10-6, 4-5) got a late goal from Amelia Smith in the 76th minute but it was too little, too late.

Lydia Neville netted in the 23rd minute (assisted by Brooklyn Phongsavath, giving her two for the match) for Davis. Anna Ward converted a long-distance bomb from near midfield for Layton in the first half that cleared leaping Davis keeper Lexi Lund.

Packer felt the Darts learned a lot from their first match against Layton, a two-overtime tie that went to penalty kicks, and it showed in round two Tuesday.

“The first time we played them we had opportunities and didn’t finish them. This game, when we had opportunities we put them away,” Packer said.

The Darts can have the Region 1 title for themselves with a win Thursday against Farmington.

“Tying for region feels great. I think of all the hard work we put in,” Maudsley said. “But we really want to win this region so we can go into the playoffs confident.”
