MORGAN — Three sets was all Morgan volleyball needed to even the score with Ogden on Tuesday, avenging a five-set loss from September and placing another win between itself and the Tigers in the Region 13 race.

The Trojans (9-8, 4-2 Region 13) stacked three set wins (25-20, 25-15, 25-16) in a matchup Morgan head coach Liz Wiscombe said came down to “heart” against an Ogden (6-10, 2-4) team that never quite let things slip out of control.

Ogden’s resilience includes the meeting’s decisive set, which saw the Tigers jump out to a 2-0 start and soon reel in a 17-11 deficit to make a late stand behind back-to-back kills by junior Taylor Duke keeping things alive deep into the final set.

Morgan senior captain Keira Brewer delivered the sweep-sealing blow inside the right sideline.

“It was a really big, especially for our confidence,” Brewer said. “Going forward, this is good to have. We just really brought it into practice this week. We worked hard, competed with each other and it carried over.”

The Trojans’ third consecutive victory moves Morgan closer to first-place Union (11-6, 5-0) as the regular season narrows. Union and Ogden represent the only marks on Morgan’s region resume so far, with four matches remaining — including another match with the Cougars at home on Oct. 8.

Wiscombe, asked about Tuesday’s rematch with Ogden, said the previous meeting showed her team just how close they are in this race.

“I think our kids came out with something to prove,” Wiscombe said. “I think the difference was heart today … (Ogden)’s big on the outside, they block our outsides well. They hustle, they scrap and they play hard.”

Swept by Union a week ago, Ogden now turns to Grantsville (11-6, 2-3) on Thursday with a chance to rejoin the win column. Morgan hosts Ben Lomond (0-12, 0-5) Thursday in a winnable matchup that could square the Trojans and Cougars in the region’s top slot.
