High school football kicks off Thursday in Brighton

The high school boys golf season is officially underway, as West Field’s Mack Herzog and Ethan Luna each captured a share of the individual title during the first Region 5 tournament played Monday at The Barn Golf Course in Pleasant View.

Herzog, a sophomore, and Luna, a junior, finished 7-under with 64 on the day, leading the Longhorns to a second-place team finish at 282 overall. Fremont placed first overall with five top-10 performances by freshman Luke Manning (3rd, 66), senior Gavin Tesch (T4, 68), senior Luke Hadley (T6, 69), senior Hutt Hadley (T9, 71), and junior Dallas Jiron (T9, 71).

GIRLS SOCCER

WEST FIELD DEF. VIEWMONT 2-2 (PKs)

After a 0-2 start to the year, West Field outlasted Viewmont 2-2 on penalty kicks at home on Monday for their first win of the regular season.

Emme Joseph handed the Longhorns a 1-0 lead by halftime, and the sophomore forward found the net again in the second half, assisted this time by Marrissa Hatch. Viewmont evened the board 2-all with goals by Tessa Nelson and Morgan Feinauer, forcing the shootout.

BL 1, WEST JORDAN 0

Ben Lomond’s Regahn Espinoza emerged with the game-winner following a full 80 minutes of regulation and nearly two overtime periods for the Scots’ first win of the season on Monday, defeating West Jordan 1-0 at home.

Espinoza’s game-winner marks BL’s first goal of the season following two shutouts at Roy (2-0) and Hunter (1-0) to begin the season.

LCA PICKS UP DANISH PROSPECT

Another globally recognized athlete is bound for Layton Christian Academy’s boys basketball program.

Joost Dalgaard, a 6-foot-7 guard of Denmark’s under-18 national team, is set to attend LCA as a senior this school year, according to Brandon Goble of Verbal Commits.

The pick-up comes just weeks after the Eagles landed one of the top recruited U.S. point guards, Illinois native Gabriel Sularski, last month.

BOTT COMMITS TO CARL ALBERT STATE

Recent Box Elder graduate Kapree Bott officially signed with Carl Albert State in Poteau, Oklahoma, for wrestling over the weekend.

Bott was a two-time state qualifier for the Bees girls wrestling team, as well as a member of the girls lacrosse program.

FOOTBALL KICKS OFF THURSDAY

Thursday marks the start of high school football season in Utah, with Davis traveling to Brighton for a Week 1 matchup 24 hours before much of the state kicks off their schedules.

The contest is the first of the locally televised Thursday Night Lights series on KJZZ (Channel 14). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Cottonwood Heights.
