PLEASANT VIEW — For the second time in two days, a nonregion football matchup shaped itself in the first quarter. This time around, it wasn’t Region 1 on top.
A highly anticipated nonregion matchup Friday between Fremont and Weber charted its course from the opening kickoff when junior Landon Palmer fell on senior Jordan Larkin’s kick and pulled the game’s opening drive right out from underneath Mo Cannon’s Warriors.
Five-star Tennessee commit Salesi Moa completed a short-range touchdown pass shortly after the takeaway, and senior running back Cade Hadley scored twice on foot in the first quarter. Fremont stopped three consecutive Weber possessions for a 21-0 lead by the second quarter en route to a 42-10, Week 1 road win.
Led up front by senior Cooper Allen, Fremont’s offensive line paved the way for what second-year Silverwolves coach Nate Tuatagaloa established as a mission to beat Weber on the ground. Those efforts helped Hadley stack three rushing touchdowns before halftime.
“Everybody knows what we’re capable of doing in the air, but today we wanted to make sure we could establish what we can do on the ground,” Nate Tuatagaloa said. “Our O-linemen, kudos to them. They’re the MVP of tonight.”
Even with their capabilities offensively, Fremont put forth a spectacular defensive performance from the first snap. Hadley batted down one of Carter Payne’s early fourth-down tries, and juniors Jaxton Hunt and Jak Masters contained the majority of Weber senior Dyson Parker’s touches out of the backfield.
Weber produced a stop late in the first quarter when junior linebacker Reese Cantwell tipped one of Fremont starting quarterback Manase Tuatagaloa’s passes into the hands of junior safety Bracken Day, but the takeaway yielded quite little for the Warriors as the night bled into the second quarter.
Payne also threw a first-half pick into the hands of Fremont senior corner Cam Graves with 1:15 to go, but the Warrior defense managed a stop to end the half.
Cannon, Weber’s second-year coach, described his sideline as a “deer in the headlights” in the fallout of the game’s opening kickoff, which Cannon said set the tone for the remainder of the first half.
“This is on me,” Cannon said. “This is on me, but I need these boys to feel it because I think that was that humbling moment that they needed. I’ve been talking to them all year about ‘Who are we?’ We’re nothing like the last team. This team hasn’t done anything yet. So, we’ve got to respond to it and figure out who we are.”
Weber took several lanes offensively, including a short-lived wildcat formation with Parker leading arguably the best drive of the half, midway through the first quarter.
Limited through the air, Payne overshot his targets often throughout his season debut, but Cannon pointed to continued reps and exposure as the remedy to an offense that struggled to establish much of a rhythm at home Friday.
“We’ve got to do a lot better job of giving him quick touches, getting them in the rhythm, and being able to split it to where he’s able to have some short stuff and then be able to pop off on the long end,” Cannon said. “It’s just getting him comfortable with some short stuff and getting him comfortable with the long stuff because we have some threats.”
Fremont’s running back room flashed its depth in the second half, as seniors Chase Blanch and Taylor Graham each produced hard-nosed touchdowns in the red zone for a 42-nil contest atop the fourth quarter.
Final stats weren’t immediately available, but Hadley led Fremont with 3 of his team’s 5 rushing touchdowns. The starting back said he can trust anyone in his spot week to week.
“Those are some of my best friends,” Hadley said. “I love all those guys. We’re always happy for each other when we all get success, there’s a lot of love for each other and it was good to see everybody have success tonight.”
Fremont prepares for another high-profile matchup at former Region 1 foe Davis. Starting the year 0-1, Weber hopes to rebound at Brighton.
