Prep roundup: Box Elder, Layton hand Tooele schools big football losses
TOOELE — Box Elder High football handed Deseret Peak a lopsided, 64-0 loss in the Golden Eagles’ first-ever contest Friday.
Kayden Reyes passed for three touchdowns and rushed for a score for Box Elder (1-0). Reyes scored on a 12-yard run to open the scoring two minutes in.
Cole Bushnell took a Reyes pass 35 yards to pay dirt. Reyes connected with Malik Crozier for a 13-yard score and Cammon Bushnell turned a Reyes pass into a 27-yard score.
Talan Sumko sacked the Deseret Peak quarterback in the end zone for a safety, giving the Bees a 29-0 lead with 11:53 left in the second quarter.
Judd Howells scored on rushes of 1 and 4 yards. Bridger Richards scored on a 1-yard dive, and Jaxen Cool scampered 55 yards for a touchdown.
Korbin Jeppesen capped the scoring with a 66-yard touchdown run at the 5:46 mark of the third quarter.
LAYTON 50, TOOELE 7
LAYTON — Layton forced three turnovers and held Tooele to 162 yards of offense on the way to a blowout home victory.
JP Garlick rushed seven times for 76 yards and a touchdown for Layton (1-0) while grabbing one interception on defense. Solomon Lee added 68 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns. Lincoln Wilcox threw 6 of 12 for 146 yards and three touchdowns. Nathan Mecham caught a 48-yard touchdown pass and Carter Hughes a 47-yard scoring strike.
Lincoln Peterson and Luke Byers led a balanced defensive effort with eight tackles each. Peterson and Tray McKinley each had two tackles for loss. Gavin Hurst returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and intercepted one pass.
WEST FIELD 48, TAYLORSVILLE 0
TAYLORSVILLE — West Field led 27-0 at halftime and rolled Taylorsville on the road to claim the program’s first nonregion win.
Boston Kap racked up a game-changing 123 rushing yards on just three carries, with two going for scores. Caden Judy added 66 rushing yards.
Easton Eilertson threw 14 of 22 for 248 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions for West Field. Five completions (two of them touchdowns) went to Jaden Fowers for 114 receiving yards. Kolt Abbott and Gavin Ortegon also caught touchdown passes.
LAYTON CHRISTIAN 22, HUNTER 7
WEST VALLEY CITY — After spotting a 7-0 margin, 2A independent Layton Christian scored three unanswered touchdowns for a season-opening win at 5A Hunter.
Thomas Vito tossed a 15-yard scoring strike to Hayden Tuinei, then ran for a two-point conversion to give Layton Christian (1-0) an 8-7 lead with 11 seconds left in the first half.
Trevor Halalilo scored on a 3-yard run in the third quarter and a 14-yard run in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
COPPER HILLS 21, NORTHRIDGE 14
WEST JORDAN — Liam Fresques threw 20 of 35 for 267 yards and two touchdowns, both to Makai So’o, in a road loss for Northridge (0-1).
So’o caught six passes for 101 yards. Andrew Ortiz caught five passes for 79 yards and rushed 12 times for 69 yards. Cooper Tubbs led Northridge with eight tackles.
KEARNS 48, BEN LOMOND 6
KEARNS — Gavin Rivera returned a kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown for the only Ben Lomond (0-1) points in a road loss.
Dashawn Gordon rushed 10 times for 63 yards while leading Ben Lomond with 10 total tackles. Rivera had seven solo tackles, caused and recovered a fumble, rushed for 22 yards and caught two passes for 35 yards.
ST. JOSEPH 54, ALTAMONT 52
OGDEN — Madden Bentley passed for four touchdowns and ran for two, then Quinn Vasquez kicked the game-winning field goal to send St. Joseph to a season-opening win over Altamont in a back-and-forth contest of 1A 8-player football.
Bentley scored on a 3-yard scamper to give St. Joseph (1-0) an early 7-0 lead and added a 6-yard touchdown run. Bentley connected with Izaiah Hebert for scoring strikes of 33 and 15 yards.
Bentley hit Marshell Beatty for a 30-yard touchdown and tossed a 15-yard scoring pass to Vasquez. After the Longhorns took a 46-45 lead, Hebert returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards for a score.
Altamont scored again to take a 52-51 lead, setting up Vasquez for the game-winner.
CEDAR 51, BEAR RIVER 14
CEDAR CITY — Jaxson Theurer connected with Eli Braegger for touchdown passes, but it wasn’t enough as the Bears fell at Cedar.
With 2:45 left in the first quarter, Theurer found Braegger for an 18-yard score, and a Stone Higley kick cut the Cedar lead to 9-7. The pair added an 8-yard touchdown to make the score 37-14 with 11:56 left in the game.
Bear River (0-1) gave up four rushing touchdowns, three passing scores and one safety.
RIDGELINE 34, MORGAN 14
MILLVILLE — George Thurston scored a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown as Morgan lost at Ridgeline in a battle of last year’s No. 1 seeds from 4A and 3A classifications.
Thurston’s 9-yard scamper tied the game 7-7 with 5:38 left in the second quarter. Cade Randall tossed a 17-yard scoring strike to Thurston to give Morgan (0-1) a 14-13 lead with 9:18 left in the third quarter.
Ridgeline responded with three unanswered touchdowns to pull away.

MORGAN — Tenlee Thomas tallied two goals and an assist to lead Northridge to a win Friday at Morgan in extra time.
Carson Reivax netted a brace for Northridge (1-4). Tieyler Hakala found the back of the net once. Mylee Williams assisted two goals.
Morgan (1-4) did not report stats.

LAYTON — Ryann Jensen scored from an assist by Brylee Davenport to break a 2-2 halftime knot and lift Layton to a home win Saturday over Bountiful (0-2).
Sophia Barnard and Lizzie Tate each scored in the first half for Layton (3-2), both assisted by Amelia Smith.
CEDAR VALLEY 2, BONNEVILLE 0
EAGLE MOUNTAIN — Bonneville (3-1) gave up two first-half goals in a road blanking at Cedar Valley.

NORTH LOGAN — Carson Reiva scored two goals and MJ Simpson had one assist but Northridge (0-4) fell at Green Canyon on Thursday.

Roy High opened its girls volleyball season 8-1 with a successful home tournament it hosted Friday and Saturday.
The Royals report wins over Ben Lomond, St. Joseph, Cyprus, Logan, Granger, Draper APA, Judge Memorial and Intermountain Christian, with a defeat against Dixie.
