Bear River High's offensive line sets up before a snap during a prep football game against Morgan on Aug. 12, 2022.GARLAND — An outpouring of community support mourning two late Tremonton police officers, Sgt. Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada, strengthens this week as Bear River High School plans to recognize both men Friday during their first home football game against Cottonwood.
Sorensen and Estrada were shot and killed after responding to a domestic violence call on Sunday evening in Tremonton, the Standard-Examiner reported Monday. A suspect, identified as 33-year-old Ryan Michael Bate, was later booked into the Weber County Jail.
Bear River head football coach Trampis Waite recognized the tragedy Tuesday via social media, encouraging fans and supporters to sport blue, in conjunction with the football team’s efforts to decorate their home stadium and uniforms in blue and black to honor both officers.
“In light of our significant loss in our community, we are asking all fans (who) are planning to attend our first home game on Friday to wear blue,” Waite wrote. “Our boys will be taped with blue athletic tape, and we will have the stadium decorated to honor the fallen officers. We hope to see you all (Friday night) in blue!”
The weight of Sunday’s fatal incident is hardly lost in the area, featuring a relatively small footprint compared to neighboring communities in Brigham City and Ogden.
Combined, Garland and Tremonton add up to 25% of Box Elder County’s total population (64,120 residents). Bear River enrolls roughly 1,200 students in grades 10-12, according to numbers provided by Niche.
“It’s a tight community up here, I am sure there will be other things that’re pitched in by our community to make it a great place to honor them,” Waite said.
Pregame or halftime recognitions have not been finalized. Friday’s kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
