CLEARFIELD — Ogden High freshman goalkeeper Whitney Fife earned her third shutout of the season in a 2-0 win at Clearfield in a late-night, nonregion girls soccer match Thursday.
Bouncing back from a 4-1 defeat at Farmington on Tuesday, the Tigers (4-2) leaned on their frosh keeper in the second half to stave off the Falcons and first-year head coach Kam Nordfors.
Ogden’s nonregion slate now includes wins over neighboring Region 1 and 5, with two matches remaining before the region schedule.
After 20 scoreless minutes, Ogden senior Megan Beus zeroed in on Clearfield (1-4) junior goalkeeper Mia Nichol from distance for the first goal of the match. Beus found senior teammate Elle Weston deep in the box for a second unanswered goal in the final seconds of the first half.
“I thought it was really big to get up early, get a lead and keep our girls shooting,” Fife said. “I think we’re connecting a lot better, and our defense is stepping up.”
The Tiger defense certainly made a difference in the second half, but not for a lack of looks by Clearfield’s growing attack. Fife added three saves alone in the first 16 minutes back, including a well-placed free kick by Falcons senior Kyleigh Cate.
Nichol produced a clean second half in goal, denying Ogden across the remaining 40 minutes of play.
Thursday marked the third match of the week for Nordfors’ Clearfield squad, finishing the week with their fourth loss following a 3-2 win over Fremont at home Tuesday. Nordfors replaced former Fremont and Clearfield coach Kelly Parke this offseason following Parke’s 25-12 run in two seasons with the Clearfield program.
A long week, which included two backyard foes, caught up with them, Nordfors said.
“It’s kind of crazy, to be honest with you,” Nordfors said. “Going from summer conditioning into tryouts, it’s just every day. This was our third game in four days, and it kind of showed today.
“Our legs were just tired today, but the mindset is just — I care about these girls and I want them to succeed. They put in the hard work, and what I enjoy most about coaching is seeing the end product of that hard work.”
With Thursday’s win at Clearfield, Fife adds another shutout to a list of complete matches defended against Manti (5-0) on Aug. 8 and West Field (2-0) on Aug. 14.
Fife’s strong start isn’t lost on second-year Ogden coach Alexis King, who tabbed Fife as her starter in goal following the departure of veteran Grace Malan, a mainstay of last year’s state runner-up team.
“I’m really impressed,” King said. “Whitney’s really stepped up this season and it’s been really fun to watch her step up as our starting varsity keeper. Every day at practice, we’re working on new things and she’s continuing to get better and better every single day. So I’m not surprised, I’m just proud and excited.”
Ogden enjoys a four-day rest before resuming its nonregion calendar at American Heritage on Tuesday, Aug. 26, and another local faceoff with Weber at home on Thursday, Aug. 28. Clearfield stays home for Northridge in its second region test on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
