Prep football: Syracuse handles Roy early in 37-12 victory

ROY — A year ago, Roy only dropped two contests during a season that culminated in a 5A state championship game appearance.
Unfortunately for the Royals, they reached that same number Friday night after only two weeks of play.
Syracuse made sure of that. The Titans came away with points on all five of their first-half possessions en route to a 37-12 decision on the road.
“Against these guys, we just wanted to be the bigger, physical team,” Syracuse quarterback Ledger Wight said. “We saw that we had the size advantage over them. We noticed that they played three down a lot on the line, so we tried to bully them for that and that’s exactly what we did.”
And, indeed, the Titans did bully the Royals for the first 24 minutes of action.
Syracuse used a balanced attack to accumulate just less than 300 yards of offense, good for four touchdowns, by the break.
Following the opening kickoff, the Titans moved down the field with little resistance. Eventually, Wight connected with one of his favorite targets, Tanner Merrill, who broke the plane of the goal line for the game’s first points.
The Royals countered on their turn. Collin Chapman took the reins first in Roy’s quarterback rotation and spearheaded an 80-yard drive. Howie Howard capped it off with a 6-yard plunge. A muffed extra point kept the Titans ahead 7-6.
Wight went to work again, directing an 80-yard march of his own. This time, he rolled right for a short, 5-yard toss to Coban Lambert in the end zone.
After Howard fumbled, Syracuse struck again. Ryker Van Komen spun into the end zone from the 4 and the Titans were up 21-6 early in the second period.
Despite its own struggles defensively, Roy was able to methodically move the ball to keep the contest close.
Once again, with Chapman in control, Roy chewed up another 80 yards. Chapman lobbed a short 2-yard TD to Drayden Esplin to cap a drive for a 21-12 score.
Syracuse’s offensive pressure proved to be too much. Skyler Orton drilled a 43-yard field goal and Wight scored on a 1-yard QB sneak just before the half to make it 30-12.
“We were just executing well. … O-line, quarterbacks, receivers, running backs, all doing our jobs, being right where we were supposed to be, every time,” Wight said. “Tanner Merrill, second fastest in the 400 in 6A in the state. He’s a really fast guy. … I love throwing it up to him. Then I’ve got Weston (Russell), a big target. My receivers are all great.”
Both offenses ground to a halt in the second half. Each defense stepped up while the offensive precision seen in the first half lagged off.
Wight and Russell connected on a fourth-down touchdown pass of 3 yards to account for the only points in the second half.
“We just need to fix up the little things,” Wight said. “The little mistakes, like turning over the ball here and there, missing a block here and there, missing a throw here and there, missing a catch here and there. …
“It’s nothing other than really just perfectly executing. When we pick that up and fix it, we’ll be better.”
The Royals will take to the road to visit Weber in The Shield Game next week, while Syracuse will visit defending 5A state champion Bountiful.
