KAYSVILLE — Energy was the buzzword in the Davis and Clearfield girls basketball game on Thursday.
More specifically, the Darts’ ability to keep pushing for a full four quarters, while the Falcons started sputtering late in the second stanza.
Davis dismantled a double-digit deficit in the second period and rallied to a deceptively easy 47-32 non-region victory over the Falcons.
Izzy Wyaskett scored on a floater with 2:43 left in the first half and Clearfield led comfortably, 19-9, when the tide turned due to the Davis defense.
The Darts employed a full-court press for the entire game and the Falcons started to fold.

“We’ve been trained to do that. We have 11 good players who can always come off the bench if we get tired, so we sub fast; that’s how we stay full court,” Davis forward Lydia Tarbet said. “It turns the ball over and that’s when we score most of our points.”
Senior guard Emma Loveland expanded on the Davis approach: “We try to get as much pressure as we can, frazzle the other team as much as we can. We’re definitely a defensive team,” she said.
In a harbinger of things to come, the Darts (2-2) closed the half on a mini 4-1 run, trailing 20-13 at the break.
“I feel like we looked a little tired. There were times where we looked really good breaking the press and times we looked a little timid,” Clearfield coach JT Soter said. “We talked about what to expect in the second half and didn’t execute that at all. Lack of focus was tiredness.”
A 10-0 spurt to open the third quarter made the overall run 14-1 and gave the Darts their first lead of the game, 23-20, keyed by back-to-back 3-pointers from Loveland late in the period.

She came off the bench and scored 12 points on four treys, with three of those coming in the second half.
“It’s never about starting; it’s what can I do when I get out there to help my team,” Loveland said. “Hitting that 3 gave me confidence to hit another one right after that. It meant a lot to me. I don’t have many games like this.”
Two baskets by Clearfield guard Brighton Bernards and a Tarbet layup for Davis in the last 2:01 of the quarter left things tied at 25 heading into the final frame.
Sticking with the 14 theme, Davis embarked on a 14-3 run in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, capped by a driving bucket from Tarbet with 4:02 remaining, as the Darts led 39-28.
During the two 14-point outbursts, Tarbet netted 10 of her game-high 14 points.

“I get a lot of energy and purpose from my team; my team is such a big part of me. They keep me motivated and I think as long as we have energy on the bench, it leads to success going forward,” Tarbet said. “I give my team credit for my confidence on the court for sure.”
Tarbet, a junior captain, simply recognized what the Darts were lacking and filled that role as a leader should.
“I saw my team was getting down, so I saw a need for someone to step up and do something about it. I went out there and my teammates got me the ball, and I was able to score some points for us,” Tarbet added.
Junior forward Kate Willard didn’t tally a point until early in the fourth quarter, then helped the Darts dramatically down the stretch, totaling nine points in a 22-7 drubbing of the Falcons over the final eight minutes.
“We’re a second-half team. We get down and we come back. Go. Go. Go. We want to get stops. If we don’t get defensive stops, it’s hard for us to bounce back,” Loveland said. “We just wanted it more. We knew we were capable of winning and wanted to get out there and secure it.”

Wyaskett and Bernards each had six points to pace the Falcon (3-3) attack.
“We had open shots we didn’t knock down; free throws we struggled with. You have a good offensive possession and miss the free throws,” Soter lamented. “We didn’t finish plays and possessions on defense or offense.”
