ROY — Eight games in, Roy High boys basketball looks good and feels good.
The Royals improved to 6-2 to begin the season with a 33-point win over 4A Park City on Wednesday night in just their second home contest. With a 76-43 win over the Miners, Roy now has wins in six consecutive games following an 0-2 start to the regular season.
Roy sophomore guard Anthony Parker’s 19 points led the floor, with six more of his teammates finding the scoring column before the night ended. Senior guard Boston Greenhalgh racked up 16 points himself, and junior forward Rock Speredon flew for 13 on the final book.
Third-year Roy coach Ryan Hannah has been especially impressed by the youngest of his three leading scorers, Parker, who dipped into double figures for a fifth time this season.
“I think, physically, he’s developed quite a bit,” Hannah said of Parker. “He’s such a smart basketball player, and he knows where to be defensively, and he knows what to look for when he gets the ball. He’s been very consistent and very exciting for a sophomore at this point.”
Parker finds himself on Roy’s starting five after recording no stats as a freshman during last year’s 6-17 campaign. He’s keeping that in mind as he grows alongside a Roy program eager to trump whatever expectations may exist for the season ahead.
“I’m a youngin’, I’m a sophomore, so I try to just keep my head high and encourage my teammates as much as I can,” Parker said. “I’ve tried to involve them, keep my energy up and it’s been working. … (Hannah)’s put a lot of trust in me and I think he’s a really good coach, and I like what he’s done with our team. We’re on a pretty big win streak right now, so it’s going good.”
On the flip side, the Miners left the gym with few positives.
Senior guard Cooper Kozlowski commanded 14 points for Park City (4-4), hampered largely by turnovers and a Roy defense that stood relentless through four quarters.
Up seven through the first quarter, Roy exploded for 27 points in the second quarter, powered by three bench 3s via junior guard Lincoln Britt and eight points by Parker, on his way to 12 before the half.
Down 46-20 at the break, Park City’s lone second-quarter field goal came via senior forward Sam Squibbs (nine points) at the 3-point line.
“The more we can get our hands on the basketball, the more good things happen,” Hannah said. “I was really happy with the way that our defense was active with their hands up.”
Roy picked up another 21 points in their return for the third quarter, featuring two more 3s via Greenhalgh and another from Parker. Greenhalgh matched his first-half production in the third quarter to amass 16 or more points in seven of his last eight starts.
Hannah likened Greenhalgh to that of Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Dončić: a strong, unyielding build that Roy can look to night in and night out.
“He knows how to get to his angles and can finish anywhere,” Hannah said. “Defensively is where Boston is really excelling. Tonight he had probably eight steals and transition points leading from there, too.”
Final stats sent following the game indeed show Greenhalgh totaling eight steals.
Such takeaways saw Roy consistently moving the rock. Senior forwards Jake Hamblin (eight points) and Jesse Jones (seven points, nine rebounds) each chipped in around the boards, and junior guard Gunner Pearson (two points) added two free throws off the bench.
Wednesday marked a season-high engagement from the bench, Hannah said.
“We’ve rotated about eight guys pretty consistently,” Hannah said. “We got a few more in tonight and really, that was something I mentioned at the end there — I was really happy with what I saw from everyone that got to play. I just felt like they stepped up and did their assignment.”
Roy travels to Mountain Crest on Saturday for a 4 p.m. matchup.
“I want to keep building on the positives,” Hannah said. “Right now, the boys have a very good energy about them. They’re playing very confidently and they’re believing in the importance of giving your best effort every night.”
