PLAIN CITY — After setting their preseason course ablaze in December, Fremont High girls basketball seems intent on more, adding their second region win 53-42 over visiting Farmington on Tuesday night.
Usual suspect Abigail Christensen led the Silverwolves (14-1, 2-0 Region 1) with 18 game-high points. Fellow sophomore Olivia Surrage (12 points) and senior Ava Post (10 points) added two more double-figure scoring nights while suppressing the Phoenix (7-7, 0-2) through four quarters.
Fremont head coach Lisa Dalebout handed her program an all-new “diamond” press ahead of Friday’s game; the Silverwolves’ penchant for pressing early handed Post and her teammates another wrinkle to throw at Farmington after finishing the scouting report, which included 6A top-10 3-point shooter and Phoenix leading scorer Emilie Figlioli (10 points).
“It takes a lot of patience and not becoming overwhelmed,” Post said. “(Dalebout) threw a new press at us today and I was really impressed.”
Post and Christensen combined powers to overcome Fremont’s initial poor showing from the field, elevating their team to an 8-7 advantage by the second quarter. By this point, Fremont had stacked its new press layout with four bodies hammering Farmington on the inbounds.
Christensen opened the second quarter with her first 3-point bucket of the night, stealing the subsequent inbound pass for a quick five-point play. Post matched her teammate’s 3-pointer shortly thereafter with Fremont ascending to a nine-point lead with 6:13 still to go in the half.
Fremont’s new press design burdened Farmington to just four points in the second quarter. Keeping the pressure, Fremont sophomore Daphnie Moyes found Surrage for a short-range jumper for a 25-11 lead before halftime.
The third quarter brought a noticeable decline to Fremont’s offense, with Farmington profiting on enough turnovers to pull within as close as eight of the Silverwolves; Fremont junior Lily Hall, recalling her team’s mental shift, said her team loosed its grip too early.
“We just needed to chill out,” Hall said. “We were all over the place, especially coming out of the third quarter. I think (Dalebout) wanted to come out really hard, and we all did, but I think we underestimated this (Farmington) team.”
Farmington junior Morgan Rogers and freshman Morgan Snell, each joining the scoring in the second half, were priming the Phoenix for a big finish. Fremont allowed a 19-point fourth quarter with six Phoenix finding the scorebook through the final frame.
Seven more points by Christensen and another 3-point bucket by Post kept Farmington at bay through the final eight minutes, as Fremont strolled away with its 14th regular-season victory in hand and much to learn on the other side of it, Hall said.
“We’re going to learn from this one, especially on the defensive end,” Hall said.
Fremont hosts Weber on Friday in preparation for a two-game road trip. Tipoff is set for 5:15 p.m.
