Among many athletes who played high school basketball in Northern Utah, two Fremont High graduates are enjoying top-level success nationally.

Currently, one is Timea Gardiner (Fremont 2022) at UCLA. The 6-foot-3 forward transferred after two seasons at Oregon State and has maintained a key role for her new team.

Gardiner is the No. 1 bench option for the No. 1 Bruins, who are currently undefeated 17 games into the season. In 19.8 minutes per game, she’s averaging 9.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while shooting team-bests 43.7% from the 3-point line and 93.3% at the foul line. Her single-game season highs are 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

One of Gardiner’s former prep teammates enjoyed the ultimate team success one month ago when Penn State women’s volleyball won the NCAA national championship. Maggie Mendelson (Fremont 2023), who played basketball and volleyball at Nebraska, transferred to Penn State to focus on volleyball this school year.

The 6-foot-5 middle blocker enjoyed season highs of 14 kills and nine blocks. The Nittany Lions finished 35-2 overall after beating Louisville in four sets to win the national championship. Mendelson totaled six kills and six blocks in the title match.

Another of their former teammates, Emma Calvert (Fremont 2021), is in her fourth year at BYU and has started all 16 games for the Cougars this season. Calvert is averaging career highs with 13.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game for BYU, which is 10-6 so far.

All three were past winners of Standard-Examiner All-Area MVP honors. Emily Isaacson (Box Elder 2019), who was the Standard-Examiner 2019 Athlete of the Year, just hit a big career milestone.

A sixth-year player at Utah Tech, Isaacson scored 14 points in a win Thursday over Seattle to push her across the 1,000-point career mark.

Isaacson, who played just two games last season due to injury, is a three-year starter for the Trailblazers and is averaging 12.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game this season.

At 216 of 545, Isaacson’s 39.6% from the 3-point line currently holds as Utah Tech’s all-time best in career 3-point percentage.

Kylee Mabry (Davis 2022) has been a bench presence for Utah Valley in her third season, averaging 9.3 points and 2.3 steals per game. Two-time Standard-Examiner All-Area MVP Kendra Kitchen (Davis 2024) scored 11 points in her collegiate debut to start the season at UVU but has been out since with an injury.

At NAIA College of Idaho, Mia Austin (Fremont 2022) is in her third season and has averaged 9.9 points per game.

In junior college ball, Avery Sanders (Syracuse 2024) is averaging 7.6 points and 3.4 rebounds as a freshman at Utah State-Eastern. Aly Coombs (Fremont 2023) scores three points per game off the bench at USU-E.

Kaylee Hess (Northridge 2024), Cami King (Syracuse 2024) and Sierra Eddie (Fremont 2023) are at Western Wyoming Community College with former Ogden High head coach Wesley Padilla. Eddie scores 12.9 points per game as a starter. Hess is scoring 7.9 points per game and shooting 49.1% from 3. King averages three points and 2.5 rebounds off the bench.

In men’s basketball, a pair of Davis County products are making an impact at Utah Valley.

Trevan Leonhardt (Davis 2020) has started all 18 games for the Wolverines this season after holding a bench role last year. The guard averages 6.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.2 assists (the latter good for 47th nationally) in 28 minutes per game.

Ethan Potter (Layton 2021) is back in action after missing five games to injury. He averaged 9.1 points and 4.6 rebounds in eight games as a starter. The forward has come off the bench for Utah Valley in five games since his return, averaging 6.8 points and 5.2 rebounds. Potter is shooting 63.9% from the field.

UVU has won seven straight and is off to a 4-0 start in the WAC.

After missing four games to start the season, former All-Area MVP Dallin Hall (Fremont 2020) returned to his spot in BYU’s rotation. In his third season as a Cougar, Hall is averaging 7.5 points and 3.9 assists per game, starting 10 of 12 contests.

In his first college season, Hunter Schenck (Weber 2024) plays 11.9 minutes per game off the bench at Utah Tech, averaging 3.5 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.

In the midwest, big man Preston Squire (Layton 2021) is in his first Division I season at Bowling Green after a year at Salt Lake Community College, playing 9.9 minutes per game off the bench.

In the junior college ranks, Kaden Erickson (Syracuse 2023) is finding his groove at Eastern Arizona College. The shooting guard is averaging 13.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 22.3 minutes per game, shooting team-highs 55.7% from the field and 45.7% from behind the arc.

After a walk-on redshirt season at Weber State two years ago, shooting guard Chance Trujillo (Davis 2021) has latched on at Snow College and has played well for the Badgers. The former prep quarterback averages 10.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 26.2 minutes per game. He’s shooting 44.4% from the 3-point line.

As a sophomore at USU-Eastern, Mark Huber (Bear River 2020) is averaging 13.4 points per game on 45.9% 3-point shooting.

Elijah Sowards (Roy 2023) is in his second season at Division III Drew University.
