Boys soccer: Ogden checks another box, shuts out Davis 3-0 capping first home slate

Tigers hang second straight shutout in 2-0 start

OGDEN — Building upon a halftime lead, Ogden High boys soccer checked another box by shutting out Davis 3-0 at home Friday to enter the weekend 2-0 in their non-region slate.

Senior Luis Velasco, assisted by junior Xavier Peregrina, handed the Tigers a 1-0 advantage before the break and the Darts (2-1) struggled to find an answer for Ogden’s attack over the next 40 minutes.

An assist by senior Gabe Liptrap set up Ogden’s second goal, scored by senior Gerardo Esquivel, midway through the second half. Junior Harrison Hoskins added the third goal late, playing a ball from Peregrina off his forehead, punctuating a second consecutive win for the Tigers at the Spence Eccles Ogden Community Sports Complex.

“From the practices building up to this we had to be locked in,” Hoskins said. “Our pressing is one of our biggest strengths… Being able to get our outside backs up the field, I think that was the biggest thing (tonight) getting the ball into the box and getting some shots on goal.”

Ogden’s diverse range of threats up top have satisfied coach Todd Scott through the two wins and, as Hoskins also pointed out, bringing the heat to every one-on-one battle is where Scott said this particular team will be at its best.

“That’s our game play,” Scott said. “We let teams chase us and move it around. … My boys are very unselfish so when we create the space to move the ball around and control, that’s when we can exploit teams like Davis. When they make a mistake, we go in and pounce.”

Scott praised the Davis program, and head coach Dillon Richens, for a quality test. Scott and the Tigers had Friday’s match singled out on the calendar before the season kicked off.

“You talk about Utah soccer and Davis is definitely up there,” Scott said. “Credit to Davis, they’re a 6A giant for a reason, but it’s nice to get the checkmark off and here we go with next week’s game, one week at a time.”

Ogden prepares for its first road test, a 5:30 p.m. kick at West High, on Tuesday, March 11.
