Prep playoff roundup: West Field baseball advances with thrilling series win; Morgan softball moves on

Ben Lomond softball plays near-record game

TAYLOR — No. 11 West Field High baseball capped a 32-hit, high-scoring Saturday with a 16-12, comeback win in Game 3 over visiting No. 22 Green Canyon to take its 4A first-round playoff series 2-1.

West Field advances to face No. 6 Dixie for a best-of-three series May 8-9 in St. George. The winner of that advances to a double-elimination bracket for the final eight teams.

West Field (17-11) trailed 10-3 after two innings but took a 15-11 lead with a seven-run sixth.

Kason Taylor hit 3 for 5 with a double, three RBIs and two stolen bases. Samuel Smith drove in three. Kanyon Pratt homered, Luke Penland tripled, and Brady Penland, Tyce Abbott, Grady Garrett and Boston Kap each added one double.

After the offensive fireworks, Taylor struck out three and allowed one hit in two shutdown innings to help the Longhorns advance.

GREEN CANYON 14, WEST FIELD 13

TAYLOR — In Game 2 of the series, West Field led 12-6 through four frames before Green Canyon rallied to force a Game 3.

Tyce Abbott hit 3 for 5 with a home run, two doubles and six RBIs. Luke Penland doubled and drove in three.

SOFTBALL

MORGAN 11, DELTA 1

MORGAN — No. 2 Morgan High softball handled No. 18 Delta in five innings Saturday to advance out of a 3A first-round regional pod.

Callie Averett allowed one run on four hits across five innings for the win, striking out three and walking one for Morgan (17-6). She also hit 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Lexi Hardman batted 3 for 4, scoring three runs. Kaiya Peterson and Joesi Kelly each drove in two runs.

The 3A double-elimination tournament moves on to the final 12, playing May 8-10 at Spanish Fork Softball Complex. Morgan next plays No. 7 Providence Hall at 12:15 p.m. Thursday.

JUDGE MEMORIAL 34, BEN LOMOND 24

GRANTSVILLE — No. 16 Ben Lomond and No. 17 Judge Memorial flirted with state records and the Bulldogs scored two touchdowns in the final two innings to claim a win in a 3A state play-in game Saturday morning at Grantsville.

The game’s 58 runs are the fifth-most all-time in Utah. Judge’s 34 runs are tied for the second-highest tally by one team. Judge’s Avery Kaleel scored seven runs, an individual state record for one game. The teams combined for 13 errors and issued 28 walks.

Ben Lomond (2-12) scored 10 runs in the third to cut its deficit to 14-13 but Judge (5-15) pulled away. Payton Huff hit 4 for 6 with a triple and five RBIs. Breannah Lamere-Alvarado drove in four. Elliott Hauser hit 4 for 6 with a double. Aliyah Gonzalez had three RBIs.

OGDEN FALLS TWICE

CASTLE DALE — No. 12 Ogden (5-18) lost twice Saturday in its pod hosted by Emery High to end its season.

First, in an 11-10, extra-inning heartbreaker to No. 5 South Summit, Ogden scored nine runs in the second inning. In the top of the eighth, Ogden sacrificed tie-breaker runner Kassidy Waddell to third and Mia Sugimoto scored Waddell with a sacrifice fly for a 10-9 lead. But South Summit scored twice in the bottom half for a walk-off win.

Kenzie George homered and drove in two for Ogden. Aracely DeLeon and Jill Wood each hit two doubles and drove in two.

No. 13 Canyon View then eliminated Ogden with a 12-5 win Saturday night. DeLeon had two hits in the loss.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

WEST FIELD 3, PARK CITY 2

PARK CITY — No. 17 West Field took a 4A first-round match Saturday at No. 16 Park City 19-25, 25-11, 25-23, 13-25, 15-8.

West Field (9-18) did not report stats. The Longhorns next draw No. 1 Orem (22-6) at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Utah Valley University.
