Roy High's Josie Williams (40) looks for a shot against Viewmont's Hannah Simonson (24) during their game Jan. 9, 2018, in Roy.ROY — Josie Williams, a Royal alum with college hoops ties from the Beehive state to Kentucky, is Roy High School’s next head girls basketball coach, Roy athletic director Mike Puzey confirmed to the Standard-Examiner on Tuesday.
The 2018 Standard-Examiner All-Area MVP returns home following a prolific playing career at Utah Valley (2018-22) and Louisville (2022-23), as well as stints in sports administration. Williams previously served as the director of operations for Utah State women’s basketball.
Williams, who holds a master’s in sports administration and a bachelor’s in school health education, is set to become a full-time health teacher at Roy in conjunction with her coaching duties, Puzey said. Roy jumped at the opportunity to reel in an alum and former star hooper.
“We’re just so excited,” Puzey said. “She’s the perfect fit, obviously being from the girls program, being a full-time teacher, being a (alumnus), and all that she’s done with Utah State. Our school and our community are excited to welcome one of our very own back.”
Graduating from Roy in 2018, Williams replaces Hailee Parry following an 8-15 finish to Parry’s second season as head coach. Williams and the Royals produced just the program’s third region championship together during the 2017-18 season.
Williams averaged a double-double (25.7 ppg, 11.2 rpg, 2.9 bpg) that season, marking the last time the Royals’ girls have posted a winning record on the hardwood. After a first-round exit in the 5A state tournament her senior year, Williams managed consecutive All-WAC first team honors at Utah Valley during her final two seasons in Orem.
As a Wolverine, Williams ranked fourth in the country with 24 double-doubles, amassing 1,200 points and 750 rebounds. Williams was also part of UVU’s first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 2021 as the WAC regular-season runner-up; Cal Baptist, that season’s WAC champion, was ruled ineligible for the tournament due to its transition from D-II.
Spending her final year of eligibility at Louisville, Williams backed the Cardinals through an ACC championship appearance and the Elite Eight. Williams spent the 2023-24 season on the Louisville staff as a graduate assistant before moving to Logan in 2024.
