Prep roundup: Friday brings playoff results all over for Northern Utah teams
Here’s a rundown of Friday’s high school sports action for Northern Utah teams.
BASEBALL
MORGAN 20, SOUTH SUMMIT 8
MORGAN — Beck Sheffield batted 4 for 4 with a home run, a double and six RBIs, and No. 4 Morgan scored multiple runs in every inning to sweep its 3A first-round series and eliminate No. 17 South Summit (7-16)
Owen Gilson hit a two-run homer for Morgan (19-8). Lincoln Gilson went 3 for 4 with a triple, a double and drove in two. Camron Talbot batted 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Sheffield got the win with three hits, three earned runs, four walks and four strikeouts over 1 2/3 innings.
The Trojans advance to the final eight and double-elimination bracket play. That begins at 7 p.m. Monday with a game against No. 12 Emery (10-17) at 7 p.m. Monday at UVU. Bracket play is Monday through Thursday, setting up a championship series Friday and Saturday.
BEAR RIVER 13, PROVO 12
GARLAND — No. 7 Bear River took a 13-7 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning and stopped a rally from No. 10 Provo (18-10) just in time to sweep its 4A second-round series.
Broxton Gardner hit a double, a single and drove in five for Bear River (19-7). Holden Potter batted 2 for 4 with a double and scored three runs. Chipper Hawes hit a double.
The Bears advance to face to the final eight and double-elimination “bracket play.” First is a matchup against No. 2 Snow Canyon (20-6) at 11 a.m. Monday at Utah Tech.
NORTHRIDGE 10, TAYLORSVILLE 1
LAYTON — No. 15 Northridge spotted No. 18 Taylorsville (11-15) a 1-0 lead in the first inning, then scored 10 unanswered runs to win the first game of the 5A regional best-of-3 series.
Boston Wright hit an RBI triple for Northridge (16-10). Jon Olson hit a three-run double. Mick Whitaker batted 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Isaac Anderson and Ryan Small each hit an RBI single. Kam Shirreffs got the win with three hits, six walks and five strikeouts over six innings.
The series continues on Saturday.
DIXIE 5, WEST FIELD 3
ST. GEORGE — No. 11 West Field saw its season end with a 4A second-round sweep at the hands of No. 6 Dixie (18-9).
Grady Garrett batted 2 for 4 with a double and scored a run for West Field. Samuel Smith and Marshal Moon each went 2 for 4, with Moon driving in one. Luke Penland hit an RBI single.
The Longhorns end the year with a 17-13 record.
CANYON VIEW 16, OGDEN 2
CEDAR CITY — No. 16 Ogden was swept by No. 1 Canyon View (22-5) in a 3A first-round series.
Rodrigo Torres hit an RBI double for Ogden. Xavier Aldous added an RBI single. Denver Rhodes batted 2 for 2. Easton Green, Kash Thompson and Jude Briskey each got a hit.
The Tigers end the season with a 5-22 mark.
COPPER HILLS 6, WEBER 1
WEST JORDAN — No. 18 Weber gave up five runs in the fifth inning in a 6A first-round Game 1 loss at No. 15 Copper Hills (5-21).
Ridge Torman, Jarett Hill, Eastyn Barker and Jace Redd each hit a single for Weber (3-22).
The best-of-three series concludes Saturday.
JORDAN 14, ROY 1
SANDY — No. 22 Roy scored its only run in the second inning in a five-inning 5A first-round Game 1 loss at No. 11 Jordan (16-10).
Connor Robinson batted 2 for 2 and drove in Tristan Young for Roy (11-15). Logan Vorwaller, Jack Sorensen and James Cochran each hit a single.
The series continues Saturday.
WOODS CROSS 11, BOX ELDER 0
WOODS CROSS — No. 23 Box Elder was held to two hits in a 5A first-round Game 1 loss at No. 10 Woods Cross (17-9).
Porter Francom and Bryson Wight each hit a single for Box Elder (7-18).
The series concludes Saturday.
VIEWMONT 10, BONNEVILLE 0
BOUNTIFUL — No. 24 Bonneville was on the wrong end of a no-hitter in a five-inning 5A first-round Game 1 loss at No. 9 Viewmont.
Ryker Allen drew a walk for Bonneville (9-17) and Trevyn Sears reached on an error.
Jack Owen struck out six in the no-no for Viewmont (17-9).
The series continues Saturday.
SPANISH FORK 9, CLEARFIELD 0
CLEARFIELD — No. 13 Clearfield suffered a home shutout loss to No. 20 Spanish Fork (10-16) in the first game of the 5A first-round, best-of-three series.
Brody Mower batted 2 for 3 for Clearfield (13-13). Hudson Meyer, Taven Swartz, Colt Chambers and Matt Rudman each had one hit.
The series concludes Saturday.
SOFTBALL
GRANTSVILLE 11, MORGAN 6
SPANISH FORK — In a clash of the 3A titans, No. 2 Morgan fell to Region 13 rival and No. 1 Grantsville (24-8) in the 3A semifinals at the Spanish Fork Complex.
Kassidy Wardell batted 3 for 4 with one RBI for Morgan (19-7). Lexi Hardman went 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs. Gwen Rickard went 2 for 3 and drove in one. Kiernee Carter and Callie Averett each hit an RBI single. Joesi Kelly went 2 for 4. Kaeson Ervin and Eva Birkeland each hit a single.
In the double-elimination portion of the tournament, the Trojans drop to one-loss competition face No. 4 Emery (21-12) on Saturday.
MORGAN 3, UNION 1
SPANISH FORK — No. 2 Morgan took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, then added an insurance run in the sixth to beat Region 13 foe and No. 3 Union (18-11) in the 3A quarterfinals earlier Friday in Spanish Fork.
Lexi Hardman batted 3 for 3 and scored two runs for Morgan (19-6). Joesi Kelly went 2 for 3 and drove in one. Stacey George and Kiernee Carter each hit a double. Kaiya Peterson hit an RBI single and Kaeson Ervin drove in one with a sacrifice bunt.
BEAR RIVER 9, STANSBURY 0
GARLAND — Luci Roche batted 3 for 4 with a home run and a double and drove in two as No. 1 Bear River swept its 4A super regional series over No. 16 Stansbury (12-13).
Bella Dougals batted 2 for 4 with a double for Bear River (28-2). Bostyn Lish hit a two-run double. Aubree Fry hit an RBI single. Sami Theurer drove in two on zero hits. Kendyl and Marley Tisdol each drove in one. Kate Wilson pitched a complete game with two hits, one walk and 15 strikeouts.
The Bears, who outscored Stansbury 20-0 in the series, advanced to face Region 11 foe and No. 9 Ridgeline at noon Tuesday in Spanish Fork.
FARMINGTON 6, LAYTON 3
FARMINGTON — Farmington scored four runs in the third inning in a region win over Layton.
Sophia Strong batted 2 for 4 and drove in three for Farmington (12-10, 4-6 Region 1). Brooklyn Wright and Hadley Crowley each went 2 for 3 with one RBI. Jane Frey, Kiley Gazafy and Meghan Fields hit one single apiece.
Morgan Rogers drove in two with zero hits. Lill Topham got the win with six hits, three runs but none earned, two walks and three strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.
Serenity Overton and Nora Morrow each hit an RBI single for Layton (4-21, 1-9). Megan Child, Kennedy Burr, Olivia Woodall and Lexie Himle each had one hit.
RIVERTON 15, FREMONT 0
RIVERTON — Fremont was held to two hits and gave up five runs in each frame in a three-inning, non-region loss at Riverton.
Abigail Valdez and Saige Steele each hit a single for Fremont (11-14).
BOYS SOCCER
SYRACUSE 1, MTN RIDGE 0
SYRACUSE — Tate Jacobs scored on an Easton Cragun assist in the second half as No. 14 Syracuse beat No. 19 Mountain Ridge (3-15) in the 6A first round.
Syracuse (8-10) travels to No. 3 Skyridge (12-5) in the second round on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
ROY 5, HUNTER 2
ROY — No. 16 Roy netted four goals after the break to overcome a 2-1 halftime deficit and down No. 17 Hunter (6-11) in the 5A first round.
Sam Bischoff, Francisco Gandarilla, Kaleb Hernandez, Asher Hunt and Quinn Smith each found the back of the net once for Roy (9-9). Brayden Buttars tallied four assists.
The Royals will travel to face No. 1 East (15-1) at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the second round.

OREM — No. 6 Syracuse was swept by No. 11 Riverton (15-15) in the 6A second round Friday at UVU. Set scores were 25-17, 25-15, 25-11.
Gabe Meredith had nine kills and seven digs for Syracuse (20-7). Anton Raadestroem and Caleb Applegate each had three blocks. Zane Nanney dished out 16 assists.
SYRACUSE 2, COPPER HILLS 1
OREM — No. 6 Syracuse won a 6A consolation match over No. 14 Copper Hills (12-18). Set scores were 19-25, 25-16, 25-16.
Gabe Meredith tallied eight kills for Syracuse (21-7). Ian Sprague served three aces. Anton Raadestroem had two blocks. Adam Martin had 12 digs. Zane Nanney added 19 assists.
CORNER CANYON 3, DAVIS 0
OREM — No. 8 Davis fell in straight sets to No. 9 Corner Canyon (14-8) in the 6A second round at UVU. Scores were 26-24, 25-20, 25-23
Luke McKnight tallied 16 kills for Davis (18-8). Jackson Kuma posted four blocks. Jack Bennett had eight digs and 15 assists.
DAVIS 2, WEBER 0
OREM — No. 8 Davis bested No. 16 Weber (12-16) in a 6A consolation match. Set scores were 25-20, 25-22.
Chase Valentine led Davis (19-8) with 10 kills. Siona Faeamani served two aces. Jack Bennett tallied seven digs and dished out 13 assists.
