Prep roundup Saturday: Northridge wins baseball series; Bonneville softball springs upset

LAYTON — Jon Olsen and Trevin Redd combined for a three-hitter as No. 15 Northridge High baseball swept No. 18 Taylorsville (11-16), winning 8-1 in Game 2 of a 5A first-round series Saturday.
In the start for Northridge, (17-10) Olsen allowed one unearned run on two hits while striking out six and walking zero in five innings. Redd allowed one hit in two innings, striking out three and walking one.
Olsen also homered at the plate and drove in two. Mick Whitaker hit 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
Northridge advances to a second-round series hosted at No. 2 Brighton (22-3) on Wednesday and Thursday. Game 1 is at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
COPPER HILLS 17, WEBER 8
WEST JORDAN — No. 18 Weber led 8-7 through five innings but saw its season end in a sweep against No. 15 Copper Hills (6-21) in a 6A first-round series.
Eastyn Barker batted 3 for 4 with four RBIs for Weber (3-23). Preston Gerritsen drove in two. Ridge Torman batted 3 for 3 with a double.
SPANISH FORK 7, CLEARFIELD 1
CLEARFIELD — Ryan Frei scored a run in the fifth inning to help No. 13 Clearfield avoid a two-game shutout against No. 20 Spanish Fork (12-16), falling in a 5A first-round sweep to the visitors.
Frei batted 2 for 3 for Clearfield (13-14). Matt Rudman added a single.
JORDAN 12, ROY 2
SANDY — No. 22 Roy saw a brief 1-0 lead evaporate when No. 11 Jordan (17-10) posted a seven-run second inning and the Royals’ season came to an end in a 5A first-round sweep.
Logan Vorwaller tripled and drove in one run for Roy (11-16). James Cochran was 2 for 3 with a double and drove in Roy’s other run.
WOODS CROSS 5, BOX ELDER 1
WOODS CROSS — No. 23 Box Elder held a 1-0 lead through three innings ut No. 10 Woods Cross (18-9) eliminated the Bees in a 5A first-round sweep.
Bryson Wight singled to lead off the game for Box Elder (7-19) and scored on a wild pitch. Kellen Kohler and Bridger Richards each added one single.
WX starter Heston White allowed one run on three hits, striking out 10 in six innings.
VIEWMONT 12, BONNEVILLE 6
BOUNTIFUL — No. 24 Bonneville cut a 6-0 deficit to 6-5 through four innings but No. 9 Viewmont (18-9) dropped a five-run fifth to end Bonneville’s season in a 5A first-round sweep.
For Bonneville (9-18), Jaygen Noble and Zack Ohlin each doubled and drove in one run. Wade Larsen singled and drove in two.
SOFTBALL
BONNEVILLE 13, EAST 11
SALT LAKE CITY — A back-and-forth game entered the seventh inning 9-9 before No. 20 Bonneville outscored No. 13 East 4-2 in the final frame for a Game 1 upset in a 5A first-round series Saturday.
A Madilynn DeGroot single scored two for Bonneville (8-16) in the top of the seventh. Ellee Summers doubled in a run and scored on an Andie Elmer single for a 13-9 lead. East got a rally going before Rylee Jones induced a flyout with the tying runs in scoring position in the bottom half to end the game.
Summers finished 4 for 5 at the plate, scoring three runs. Elmer and Kaylee McAfee each had three hits. Peyton Johnson drove in three runs.
The series concludes Monday at East (17-11).
CLEARFIELD 15, WOODS CROSS 0
CLEARFIELD — No. 12 Clearfield scored 13 second-inning runs and blanked No. 21 Woods Cross (7-15) in three innings to take Game 1 of a 5A first-round series.
For Clearfield (14-8), Jenna Lloyd hit one batter to spoil a truncated perfect game, striking out two in 37 pitches over three innings. She batted 3 for 3 with a double, four RBIs and three runs scored from the leadoff spot. Lyla Leonhardt doubled twice and had two RBIs. Abbie Hale hit 2 for 2 with two RBIs. Skylar Davis hit a triple.
The teams conclude the series Monday.
HUNTER 12, NORTHRIDGE 7
WEST VALLEY CITY — No. 18 Northridge led 6-0 midway through the fifth before No. 15 Hunter (10-14) scored 12 fifth-inning runs on five hits, three walks and four errors to take Game 1 of a 5A first-round series Saturday.
Kaylee Shirreffs batted 3 for 5 with a triple, double and three RBIs to lead Northridge (7-15) at the plate. Kaydence Chournos hit 2 for 4. Braylynn McClellan hit a double.
The teams finish the series Monday.
EMERY 4, MORGAN 3
SPANISH FORK — No. 2 Morgan took a 3-0 lead in the first but saw its season end in a 3A one-loss elimination semifinal when No. 4 Emery (22-13) posted a four-run sixth inning Saturday in Spanish Fork.
Joesi Kelly, Kiernee Carter and Stacey George each drive in a run during the first-inning rally for Morgan (19-8). George batted 2 for 3 with a double. Callie Averett had the shutout through five innings.
Emery then lost to No. 1 Grantsville 11-1, giving Grantsville the 3A state title.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
DAVIS 2, FARMINGTON 0
OREM — Region 1 champion and No. 8 seed Davis finished its season claiming a 25-17, 25-21 win over No. 10 Farmington in the sixth-place game at the 6A state tournament Saturday at UVU.
Luke McKnight had 11 kills for Davis (20-8). Chase Valentine totaled four blocks. Siona Faeamani and Jack Bennett each added eight assists.
DAVIS 2, SKYRIDGE 0
OREM — Earlier Saturday, Davis advanced in the consolation bracket with a 25-21, 25-22 win over No. 12 Skyridge. Luke McKnight had 12 kills and six digs. Jackson Kuma added six blocks. Siona Faeamani totaled 10 assists.
