CLEARFIELD — Four RBIs by Alexandra Bingham led No. 12 Clearfield, tallying eight total RBI on nine hits, over No. 21 Woods Cross in a 10-0 victory Monday, sealing up the Falcons’ first round of the 5A state softball playoffs.

The Falcons advance to the second round for a best-of-three at No. 5 Olympus beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Stacking a second consecutive shutout, Clearfield (15-8) leaned on Bingham and Jenna Lloyd (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 6 K) to stave off the Wildcats (7-16) in just five innings. Lloyd (3 for 3), Lilly Lara, and Emma Dishongh each drove in a run; Bingham and Lloyd each recorded RBI doubles.

After Thursday’s opener with Olympus, Game 2 is Friday at 1 p.m. and a Game 3, if needed, immediately follows.

BONNEVILLE 17, EAST 3

SALT LAKE CITY — No. 20 Bonneville needed five innings to crush No. 13 East (17-12) and sweep the best-of-three, 5A playoff first-round series Monday.

Samantha Mills hit 2 for 4 with two doubles, two RBIs and four runs scored for Bonneville (9-16). Andie Elmer homered and drove in three while scoring three runs. Marley Chournos, Madilynn DeGroot and Dani Elmer each added two RBIs.

Peyton Johnson threw a complete game for the Lakers, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking one.

Bonneville advances to a second-round series with Region 5 power and No. 4 seed Box Elder (24-3). That series begins at 4 p.m. Thursday and concludes Friday.

HUNTER 18, NORTHRIDGE 11

WEST VALLEY CITY — No. 17 Northridge dropped a first-round Game 3 tiebreaker 18-11 at No. 15 Hunter on Monday.

With the series even 1-1, the Knights squandered a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Hunter (11-14), advancing to the second round at No. 2 Bountiful on Thursday, dropped eight runs in the third and 10 more through the seventh. Down 12-3 in the fourth, Northridge picked up five relief runs off at-bats by Braylynn McClellan (2B), Kaylee Shirreffs (3B) and Madisyn Lecour (error) to trail 12-8 heading into the fifth.

Gracie Butte, singling in a run, and Berklee Larsen, doubling home two more, challenged the Wolverines with more runs in the seventh. Aubrey Solomon (2.2 IP, 5 H, 8 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) picked up the loss as the Knights ended their campaign 8-15.

BASEBALL

RIGDELINE 6, BEAR RIVER 4

ST. GEORGE — No. 7 Bear River plated a run and had the tying runs in scoring position with two outs in the seventh but saw its season end in a loss to No. 3 Ridgline (24-5) on Tuesday morning at Utah Tech.

A sacrifice flyout by Dallin Rice in the first, and a run scored by Michael Sanchez on a passed ball in the third, were Bear River’s only early answers as the Riverhawks carried a 6-2 lead into the fifth.

Chipper Hawes hit a solo homer to lead off the sixth to cut the Bear River (19-9) deficit to 6-3. The Bears loaded the bases to start the seventh; Sanchez scored on a Broxton Gardner sacrifice fly but the potential rally stopped there with an outfield lineout and a groundout to second base.

Ethan Higgs hit two doubles for Bear River. Rice, Nick Oliverson and Kolten Summers each had two singles. Stephen Starnes allowed one run on one hit while striking out five in five relief innings.

SNOW CANYON 10, BEAR RIVER 7

ST. GEORGE — Bear River fell to No. 2 Snow Canyon (21-6) to open 4A double-elimination bracket play Monday morning at Utah Tech.

After falling behind 7-1, a Holden Potter three-run double capped a five-run sixth for Bear River, cutting its deficit to 9-7, but the Bears couldn’t convert on two at-bats in the seventh with the potential tying run at the plate.

Potter batted 3 for 3. Nick Oliverson and Brooks Drollinger each had two hits. Thomas Summers wore two hit-by-pitches and scored twice.

EMERY 10, MORGAN 3

OREM — No. 12 Emery (11-17) used six singles, two walks and a hit-by-pitch to pour eight runs on No. 4 Morgan to open 4A double-elimination bracket play Monday at UVU.

Luke Bauerle hit 2 for 3 with a triple and three runs scored to lead Morgan (19-9) at the plate. Easton Venz hit 2 for 4.

Morgan’s loss dropped the Trojans to an elimination game with No. 9 North Sanpete on Tuesday.

Starting at $4.32/week.
