TAYLOR — No. 1 West Field did not take No. 17 Mountain View lightly Thursday in the second round of the 4A boys lacrosse playoffs.
Attacker Gage Wright scored just 10 seconds into the game and the Longhorns were on the loose.
“Have to move the ball quick and show we’re coming out hot … they’re going to give up. That’s what our plan was,” Wright said. “First-year school as No. 1 seed, playing on our home field — that’s exciting.”
The excitement continues Saturday as the Longhorns advanced to the quarterfinals by blasting the Bruins 21-0.
“When you score early, they start sagging and that’s when I can dump it to my teammates,” Wright said. “We go on a roll, they can’t keep up.”
Wright scored three goals in the first 4 minutes, 26 seconds and the Longhorns logged eight in the first quarter.
“Always try to stay humble going in, making sure I’m picking up my teammates. I usually try to get three points, then begin passing the ball, not being a ball hog,” Wright said. “Getting the ball to my players and let them do what they do best. Keep cool heads, moving off the ball and see what happens.”
Four more goals from Longhorns at the midway mark of the second quarter initiated a running clock, punctuated by a point from defenseman Tyson Clarke, who rambled the length of the field and scored with 4:31 remaining.
The Longhorns (16-3) led 14-0 at the break and 19-zip after three.
West Field opened 3-3 in the pre-season, then ripped off 12 straight wins to capture the school’s first region championship and the No. 1 seed in the 4A field.
“We played … opponents that brought us together and from that point on, we kept connecting,” Wright said. “We’re a family and that’s how we’ve been able to cruise through like this.”
Wright and Grady Call both netted three times in the first half, while Richard Sparrow, Kenny Olsen, Hayden Hansen and Lincoln Miller added two apiece for the blowout victory.
On the defensive side of the slate, goalkeepers Carter Thornock and Greyson Olsen recorded a clean sheet for the Longhorns over Mountain View (6-12).
“I’m blessed to have as good a defense as I do; so many good guys. Kelton (Wright), Tyson, Cash Colohan — everyone is so amazing. There are not many shots. The team I have, they dominate. They’re powerful,” Thornock said. “It’s a whole team thing at the end of the day. … The middies, the transition we have, the attack, everything we do is well-focused as a team. I’m so grateful for how close we’ve gotten.”
Thornock came by goalkeeping duties through preparation.
“In fifth grade, I was the only one wearing a cup in practice so I got put in the cage and I’ve stuck with it ever since,” he said.
At halftime, several post-season honors were announced, and to no one’s surprise, the Longhorns cleaned up on those awards like they did during the campaign.
Gage Wright (attack), Olsen (middle), Kelton Wright (defense), Carson Beagley (LSM), Hansen (short stick, D middle) and Porter Lawrence (faceoff) were voted all Region 11 by the coaches.
All-region offensive MVP went to Gage Wright.
“I was excited when I heard that. I was jumping up and down. I was ecstatic. Not much more I can say,” Wright added.
Colohan was awarded a gold watch for “most remarkable academic and athletic achievement” at West Field High.
There are not many seniors on West Field High teams, with Wright being one of the few, and he has excelled.
“It was lucky for me to be on this team; I get one more time on Saturday,” Wright said.
West Field hosts the winner of No. 8 Canyon View and No. 9 Juan Diego on Saturday.
