Prep roundup: Box Elder, Davis softball both advance in state playoffs

BRIGHAM CITY — Box Elder High softball fans might cue up reruns of “I Love Lucy” after the No. 4 Bees got past No. 20 Bonneville with a 9-5 win Friday for a two-game sweep of their 5A second-round series.

Lucy Griffin hit a two-run homer in the first to put Box Elder (26-3) up 2-0 and a two-run shot in the fourth for an 8-2 lead. Lucy Braegger, meanwhile, struck out 12 Lakers and allowed three earned runs on seven hits in a complete-game victory. Griffin finished 3 for 4. Brooke Richards drew three walks and totaled two RBIs.

Elle Summers hit a solo home run in the fourth to get Bonneville (9-18) to within 6-2 before Griffin answered. Marley Chournos and Madilynn DeGroot each had two hits, with Chournos and Andie Elmer hitting doubles.

Box Elder advances to the final eight and double-elimination bracket play, set to face No. 5 Olympus (21-3) at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Valley Softball Complex in Taylorsville.

DAVIS 10, COPPER HILLS 5

KAYSVILLE — No. 5 Davis outhit No. 12 Copper Hills (11-15) by a 17-5 margin and scored four in the sixth inning to put away a late push Friday to sweep a 6A second-round series in two games.

One of those five Copper Hills hits was a D Moss two-run homer off Serena Roth in the top of the sixth to cut the Davis lead to 6-5. Cambell Christensen took over in the circle and faced the minimum over the final 1 2/3 innings.

Davis (23-6) quickly responded in the bottom half. Jewel Korth plated two on a double and Riley Jacques followed with a two-run home run to make it 10-5. Jacques drove in four and Korth three for the Darts. Norah Sunderland batted 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

Davis advances to the final eight and double-elimination bracket play to face No. 4 Lehi (22-8) at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Valley Softball Complex in Taylorsville.

OLYMPUS 2, CLEARFIELD 1

HOLLADAY — No. 12 Clearfield’s Jenna Lloyd dueled No. 5 Olympus pitcher Charlie Turner to the finish but one swing sent the Falcons to a bitter end in Game 3 of a best-of-three, 5A second-round series Friday evening.

Lloyd held Olympus (21-3) to four hits in six innings, striking out five to pitch around four walks. Allison Robles hit what proved to be the winner with a two-run home run in the third inning for the Titans.

Addyson Haddock doubled in the fourth but was left at third base. In the sixth, a Lyla Leonhardt single and an Olympus error gave Clearfield runners on the corners with one out, but Leonhardt was thrown out at the plate on a double-steal attempt.

Skylar Davis led off the top of the seventh with a single and Brynn Nicholls reached on a dropped third strike with one out. Davis scored on an Emma Dishongh sacrifice fly and Nicholls moved into scoring position on an error, but Turner tallied her third strikeout in the circle for Olympus to end the game.

Nicholls, Lloyd and Abbie Hale each added one single for Clearfield.

CLEARFIELD 17, OLYMPUS 1

HOLLADAY — Jenna Lloyd pitched a five-inning three-hitter and handed Olympus its third loss of the season with a run-rule crushing to force Game 3; the Falcons outhit the Titans 15-3.

Addyson Haddock hit 3 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs scored for Clearfield. Lyla Leonhardt hit a solo homer in the first inning. Abbie Hale drove in three and joined Alexandra Bingham, Brynn Nicholls and Emma Dishongh with two hits apiece.

BINGHAM 13, FREMONT 3

SOUTH JORDAN — No. 10 Fremont’s 1-0 lead after one inning was short-lived and No. 7 Bingham (19-8-2) run-rule the Silverwolves in five innings to win Game 2 and the 6A second-round series Friday.

Olivia Broadbent drove in two for Fremont (11-16). Savannah Palmatier and Cara Henrie each hit 2 for 3, with Palmatier adding one RBI by singling in Saige Steele in the first.

HERRIMAN 13, SYRACUSE 1

HERRIMAN — No. 8 Herriman (19-10) overpowered No. 9 Syracuse for the second straight day, sweeping the 6A second-round series with a five-inning Game 2 win Friday.

Oaklee Derrickson, Grace Thomas, Liv Brown and Hannah Reed each had one single for Syracuse (15-13), with Derrickson driving in Paizlee Prathan in the fifth.

RIVERTON 15, LAYTON 0

RIVERTON — After Thursday’s 5-1 battle, No. 16 Layton suffered a no-hit shutout loss to No. 1 Riverton (26-4) and pitcher Kaelynn Flynn, who struck out six and walked zero in four innings to eliminate the Lancers in a 6A second-round Game 2.

Ryleigh Newey, who had Layton’s only hit Thursday, reached via error for Layton (4-23).

EAST 1 def. NORTHRIDGE 1 (5-4 PKs)

SALT LAKE CITY — No. 9 Northridge (12-6) fell in a heartbreaker at No. 1 seed East (17-2) in the 5A state quarterfinals, playing to a 1-1 draw through regulation and extra time before losing 5-4 in a penalty shootout.

BINGHAM 2, DAVIS 0

KAYSVILLE — No. 5 Davis (11-6) saw its season end Friday with a home shutout loss to No. 13 Bingham (9-7) in the 6A quarterfinals.
