PROVO — Davis DeGroot returns home a four-time state champion from the Utah high school track and field championships, finishing Saturday at BYU. The Bonneville junior led Northern Utah teams with four individual wins in the 5A boys 100, 200, 400 and long jump over the weekend.
Winning the 100-meter race with a final time of 10.69, DeGroot fell shy of state record-holder Amari Adams (10.53) and beat out Timpview senior (and good friend of DeGroot’s) Jack Weaver in second place with a final time of 10.71.
“I’m ready to break a state record or two,” DeGroot said.
Weaver chased DeGroot as the runner-up in each of the 200 and 400 races.
“I’m so grateful for him,” DeGroot said. “There’s no way I would’ve been able to have the times that in that (200), he helped me through that curve and helped me push through. It’s so nice having a competitor and he’s a great guy, one of my best friends.”
Off the track, DeGroot added a fourth title with a jump of 22 feet and 6 1/2 inches to win the long jump about one week after setting a state record in the event at the Region 5 meet.
Seeing and believing, that’s been DeGroot’s methodology in all four of his events.
“I almost approach it the same way,” DeGroot said. “I’m mentally ready to go, and then I just feel good. I got to tell myself I’m going to get a great jump and I just go and do what’s natural. …
“It’s one of the best feelings in track.”
Box Elder’s Kassidee Kidd, clearing 17 feet and 4 3/4 inches in the girls long jump, provided the lone area 5A girls individual title.
In 6A, Layton’s Burklie Burton scooped two titles, first clearing 145 feet and 7 inches in the discus, and another 41 feet and 1 3/4 inches in shot put.
Elsewhere, Syracuse’s Kennedy Hadley, Aarianna Pearson, Shelby Lord, Talia Thompson, McKenzie Hislop, Haven Larsen, Ariah Hacker and Brinley Barkdull registered a winning time of 3:53.60 in the 4×400 relay.
Davis athlete Caleb Flint fell shy of his own 300-meter hurdles state record (36.51) with his winning time of 37.16 on Saturday. In the 110-meter hurdles, Weber’s Josh Hamblin picked up his seventh state title with a winning time of 14.03, just shy of his state record 13.80 recorded in 2024.
Hamblin entered the championship race nine months removed from an ACL tear.
“There were a few points where I wanted to quit but I knew it was the stuff I’d done before and knew I could it again, no matter what. Just came out here and did it, a little out of shape, but I came out here and did anyway.”
Hamblin isn’t cleared yet to play football but still found a way to up his track title count.
“State championships, all I think about is winning,” Hamblin said. “I don’t really think about that myself. Just go into that flow state, you know, slow motion.”
Backed by two-time champ Kenneth Whitmer, Morgan claimed the 3A boys team championship with a 98.5 total points, edging out region neighbor Union (97.00) by, possibly, one event.
Whitmer finished first at 15.23 in the 100-meter hurdles and first in high jump, clearing 6 feet and 7 inches.
The Trojans lost to Union in the 4×400 relay. Morgan’s Max Holtry, Parker DeVries, Maverick Guymnon, Bodie Erickson, Esplan McCellan, Henry Rose, and Jonas Archibald fell just two seconds short – 3:22.10 to Union’s 3:20.53.
Union finished three seconds shy of Judge Memorial’s state record of 3:17.55 in the 4×400, claiming the race but falling short of the point total needed to flip the tables with Morgan.
“They wanted to be a part of something special and kids stepped up,” coach Brennen Fuller said. “Going into today, we might actually (of) thought we’d win by more than we were, but as track is, we some things not go our way, but then we have some boys step up and we came to do that last (4×400 relay) and those boys muscled it out.”
