Davis High's Riley Jaques watches for a signal during a region softball game at Syracuse on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, in Syracuse.Producing two runs on seven hits, No. 2 Davis High ran out of chances in a 5-2 decision to No. 8 Herriman in the first game of bracket play Tuesday in the 6A state softball tournament, held at the Valley Regional Softball Complex in Taylorsville.
Two losses — first 7-4 to No. 4 Lehi earlier in the morning and the subsequent loss to the Mustangs on the one-loss side of the bracket — bring the Darts to a 23-8 finish following their fourth region title. Davis swept Region 1 this season, finishing 10-0 for its best region record since going 11-1 in 2017.
Herriman (20-11) capitalized on all five hits against Davis starter Serena Roth (7.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K), boosting a 3-1 lead with two more runs in the seventh. In the final frame, Roth lined a one-out RBI into center field for Davis’ first run since a Riley Jaques RBI in the first.
Jaques (3 for 3), singling in the game’s first run, gave Davis a short-lived 1-0 lead early. Kinlee Dermaid powered a two-run homer off Roth for a 2-1 lead with two outs in the top of the third. Davis stranded two baserunners in the third, and Sammy Nelson later grounded into Hadlee Isaacs’s error in the fourth, scoring another run.
A short fifth and a squandered double by Jaques in the sixth set the stage for Sofia Lancaster’s two-out RBI single off Roth in the top of the seventh. With too small of an answer in the seventh, Davis’ final word arrived with Roth’s lone RBI.
LEHI 7, DAVIS 4
A four-run stand by Davis in the sixth didn’t measure up to Lehi earlier Tuesday, holding out 7-4 in the opening round of 6A state bracket play in Taylorsville. Three home runs weighed down the Darts.
Brynlee Cook handed Lehi an early 1-0 lead, soloing off Davis starter Cambell Christensen (3.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 7 K) in the bottom of the second. Christensen gave up three more runs in the fourth, including a three-run home run by Camry Wasser.
Riley Jaques put Davis on the board for the first time, turning out a two-RBI double in the top of the sixth. Christensen and Hadlee Isaacs chipped in two more runs on the same side. Now up only 6-4, Lehi picked up a seventh run courtesy of Piper Emery.
With a scoreless seventh, Davis finished its morning matchup with three RBI on six hits.
SALEM HILLS 11, BOX ELDER 7
A walkoff grand slam by Leila Stevenson dropped No. 4 Box Elder, falling to No. 1 Salem Hills 11-7 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night.
BE heads into the one-loss portion of Wednesday’s 5A state softball semifinals held at the Valley Regional Softball Complex in Taylorsville.
Box Elder’s Lucy Braegger (2.1 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 2 BB 1 K) conceded two late homers to the Skyhawks (26-4).
Salem Hills awaits the winner of the Bees (27-4) and No. 5 Olympus, resuming their postseason feud in the 10:30 a.m. one-loss playoff on Wednesday.
With the start, Kennadie Blackmer (4.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) kept the ship steady until the fourth when Salem Hills captured a 4-3 lead. Izibel Mason, Brooke Richards and Maclee Willard each answered with an RBI in the top of the fifth for the Bees.
Salem Hills padded its lead in the top of the fifth, picking up two runs on an error by Katelyn Oki and an RBI single by Ailyah Elmer. Keyana Murray, soloing off Braegger for a 7-all contest in the bottom of the sixth, set the stage for a Stevenson walkoff.
Kailee Hall (2-4) and Brooke Richards (1-3) led Box Elder at the plate with two RBIs apiece. The Bees finished with six RBI on seven hits.
BOX ELDER 10, OLYMPUS 2
Box Elder wiped out No. 5 Olympus 10-2 in the opening matchup of 5A state bracket play on Tuesday in Taylorsville.
Bees starter Lucy Braegger (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 11 K) commanded the circle, as Box Elder racked up 10 runs on 16 hits at the plate. Kennadie Blackmer (3 for 4) produced a game-high three RBIs; Alexis Hales (3 for 3) and Jenna Marble (1 for 3) each added two RBIs.
