Davis High's Jaxon Marble (8) and Owen Talbot (1) celebrate a home run during the 6A state baseball semifinals versus Lehi on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at the UCCU Ballpark at Utah Valley University in Orem.

OREM — The vision appeared with Owen Talbot’s towering solo shot, tying the ballgame 5-all in the bottom of the sixth, and disappeared with two runs walked in by Cayman Sanchez, as No. 3 Davis High drifted from No. 10 Lehi in a 7-6 defeat at the 6A state baseball semifinals, held Wednesday night at UCCU Ballpark at Utah Valley University.

Lehi (18-14) extended the semifinals another day, handing Davis (23-7) its first loss of bracket play. The Darts return to UVU for another crack at reaching the state championship series this weekend. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. Thursday with Lincoln Green slated for the start, Davis coach Josh Godfrey said.

Sanchez (1.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K) relieved Croydon Christensen, squandering a tie ballgame glued together with Talbot’s sixth-inning bomb over the left fence. Sanchez loaded the bases, then struck Murphy Madsen in the sleeve and walked Boston Drakulich for a 7-5 Lehi lead.

Carter Garrett flickered hope with a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, but Madsen shut down Stryder Prowse and Gavin Jacks to end the game. Godfrey acknowledged the pressure-filled environment he threw Sanchez and Christensen into late, following a limited start by Kaleb Weaver (3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K).

“It probably got to (Sanchez) just a little bit,” Godfrey said. “We’re in a situation now where guys have to throw strikes.”

Down 1-0 early, Davis took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on a Weaver RBI triple and sacrifice RBI off the bat of Jaxon Marble.

Cole Ybarra, grounding into a fielder’s choice, capped off a four-run push in the top of the fourth for a 5-1 Pioneer lead.

Two RBI by Weaver and Talbot in the fourth, as well as Talbot’s game-tying homer in the sixth, evened the score late. Davis, however, couldn’t string together enough hits down the stretch despite outhitting Lehi 12-5 at the plate.

Weaver (3 for 4) and Talbot (2 for 4) led Davis with two RBIs apiece.

“We didn’t get a big hit when we loaded the bases,” Godfrey said. “They had guys right there, one hit at a key time would’ve won that game, but we can’t walk 10 guys.”

Throwing strikes, capitalizing on base hits, and executing bunts is how Davis wins Thursday’s threepeat of the Davis-Lehi postseason series, Godfrey said.

“Today, I’d say we only did one out of three,” Godfrey said. “That’s going to make it tough to win games. We’ve gotta do two out of three, or three out of three, to beat a team like Lehi.”
