HERRIMAN — Twenty-three seniors put a perfect season on the line for No. 2 Davis High boys lacrosse against No. 1 Corner Canyon Friday at Zions Bank Stadium. The Chargers, reeling from a 5-2 halftime deficit, outpaced Davis in the second half for a 9-7 win and a second-consecutive 6A championship over the Darts.
A 4-0 start to the second half fueled the four-time champion Chargers (19-1), looking to sophomore dual-player Pierson Degracie for three more goals left unanswered in the fourth quarter. Squandering a three-goal lead, Davis (19-1) scored just once more in the third, coming off the stick of senior midfielder Christian Bott to even things up 6-all.
Senior midfielder Dawson Draper handed Davis the game’s first goal in the first quarter, and two more goals by senior attacker Brek Jensen fanned the flames offensively. On the other end, Davis junior goalkeeper Tristan Tucker and the Darts limited Corner Canyon, a team averaging 14.0 goals per game, to two in the first half.
“There’s nothing quite like it, we had it right there in front of us two years in a row,” Draper said. “It was right there and no words can describe it.”
Draper, and the lion’s share of Davis’ senior class, were some of the first kids that signed up for junior lacrosse with present-day Darts head coach, Trevor Yocom, dating back to the Obama administration and well before the game had been sanctioned at the high school level.
“With 23 seniors, it’s been a brotherhood that’s developed over the last 10 years,” Yocom said. “They just wanted to come out and play their game for each other. We tried to focus on the things we can control, but the outcome’s going to be the outcome.”
Davis claimed its 5-2 halftime lead with three seconds left in the second quarter, connecting the dots on a tight pass from senior midfielder Ashton Wood to senior attacker Rocky Edelman for a second uncontested goal against Corner Canyon’s Rhett King.
But the sturdy line keeping the Chargers off the board soon unraveled, with senior Brock Sorenson firing off the first of four unanswered goals for a brief 6-5 lead – Corner Canyon’s first of the game – late in the third quarter; Bott tied things up 6-6 moments later.
“A turnover here, a missed pass there, it makes a difference in a big game like this,” Yocom said.
Degracie’s fourth-quarter onslaught, and the opposing attack, rapidly weighed on the Davis defense as the fourth quarter grew, senior defender Charlie Shupe said.
“From the beginning of the year, we decided to leave no doubt,” Shupe said. “We didn’t want to regret anything. It hurt today, too, but I know we left everything out on the field. It’s been fun, it’s been an amazing season and I’ll love these boys no matter what.”
Davis finished two goals shy of yet another overtime finish to match the double-overtime finale that saw Corner Canyon emerge with its third title, a 12-11 win over Davis, in 2024. Together, Yocom and Davis finished 10-0 in Region 1 for the program’s fourth region title.
“They wouldn’t have imagined they’d be here two years in a row like this,” Yocom said. “To go 19-1 is just incredible. They’re a great team and they’re great men. It’s more than just about lacrosse and they’re just wonderful people.”
