Bonneville's Whitni Johnson poses with her 5A state championship trophy at the 5A state girls golf championships on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Glendale Golf Course in Salt Lake City.

WASHINGTON TERRACE — The squall of this year’s state girls golf champions includes Bonneville High’s Whitni Johnson, delivering her school’s first individual state title since Lea Garner in 2012.

Johnson finished 3-under through 36 holes at Glendale Golf Course in Salt Lake City on May 19-20, finishing four strokes better than Salem Hills’ Navy Hubbs, to become the latest 5A champion and the lone Northern Utah title-holder this spring.

In her opening round, Johnson recovered from back-to-back bogeys on holes No. 10 and No. 11 with a birdie on No. 12, and chipped in for eagle on No. 13. In her second round, Johnson picked up three bogeys on the front 9, later responding with four birdies on the back.

Not one to check the leaderboard, Johnson caught a few hints along the final holes of her second round. Cameras and her teammates began to descend on the No. 18 green.

“That made it real,” Johnson said. “I almost started to cry on the last putt.”

The Bonneville High girls golf team poses with 5A state championship trophy on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Glendale Golf Course in Salt Lake City.

Johnson, who finished fourth individually at last year’s tournament, said her first state title, and Bonnevile’s first girls individual championship in over a decade, has spent much of the spring season perfecting her short game, among other adjustments.

There’s a tee-to-the-green process Johnson carries herself with — and something her father and Lakers head coach, Brett Johnson, consistently reminds her of during the regular season. Asking it of herself for a full round, Johnson said, is new territory.

“I haven’t really done that until this tournament,” Johnson said. “I was really nervous, but I’d told myself, ‘Just stay in my process, and know you’re good enough to win a state title.'”

As a team, Bonneville shot 89-over as runner-up to state champion Woods Cross, led by third-place Kennedee Pearson (4-over). Anna Umbrell (31-over), Adiysn Stone (31-over) — tying for 22nd — and Addy Stranger (32-over), caught in a three-way tie for 24th, joined Johnson in the individual top 25.

Johnson represented Bonneville on the All-State First Team; Umbrell was named All-State Second Team, and Stone was named All-State Honorable Mention.

Elsewhere in 5A, Box Elder landed four All-State Honorable Mentions — Izabel Nelson (28-over, 19th), Ruby Owens (32-over, 24th), Kyah Phippen (33-over, 27th), and Olivia White (35-over, 30th) — as part of a sixth-place team finish by the Bees.

Morgan strings three top-10 state finishes in 3A

Jane Poll, finishing 11-over as individual runner-up to Providence Hall’s Paige Anae, led Morgan in a runner-up finish to Juan Diego Catholic, beating out the Trojans by a stroke 699 to 700, in the 3A state girls golf tournament at Lakeside Golf Course in Bountiful last week.

Sophie Demond, swinging 15-over for eighth, and Kenadee Benson, finishing just one stroke higher at 34-over in ninth, fueled the Trojans’ hot finish.

Presley Hester finished 47-over in 18th place, representing Ben Lomond in the top 25; the Scots did not qualify for a team score. In eighth overall, Ogden landed two names — Julia Draper (64-over, 31st) and Charlotte Phipps (66-over, 31st) — in the individual top-40.

In the 2A tournament in Salt Lake City, St. Joseph’s Abby Gough, carding 19-over for fifth individually, and Lizzie Randall, listing 23-over for 10th, strung two top-10 finishes for the fourth-place Jayhawks, 73 strokes shy of champion Beaver.

In the 6A tournament in Salt Lake City, three Northern Utahns — Weber’s Remi Rawlings (E, T3), Fremont Susan Tiffner (5-over, 6th), and Syracuse’s Kylee Cosper (8-over T8) — joined champion, Lone Peak’s Saydie Wagner, in the top-10 list.

Layton’s Addison Cannon (13-over, T12), Syracuse’s Kai Post (19-over, T18), and Weber’s Elaina Hales (23-over, T22) slipped into the top-25.

Beard, BL boys hoops part ways after six seasons

Ogden native and former pro Tanoka Beard’s time as Ben Lomond’s head boys basketball coach has come to an end. Last Thursday, BL informed the Standard-Examiner of Beard’s decision to step down from the position after six seasons.

Beard and the Scots went 38-103 since first stepping up to the job in 2019. It was Beard’s first head coaching position following a prolific career at Boise State and professionally abroad.
