PLAIN CITY – A shining junior class is the bulwark of the Fremont girls basketball team this year, but overall, it’s also one of the deepest rosters for 16th-year coach Lisa Dalebout since their last state title in 2021.

The Silverwolves tip off the season at defending Region 8 champion Payson on Thursday in the interest of setting a high bar for themselves from the jump, Dalebout said during practice last week.

Fremont’s concentration isn’t on last year’s 72-38 6A quarterfinal loss to Bingham but on why they won’t let it happen again.

“We’re more experienced – we’re not going to have that,” Dalebout said of last year’s tournament finish.

“…They’re more experienced, they’ve worked together, and these girls have played together since they were little, and there’s something to say to that (because) you don’t get that very often – especially in this era – you get kids that are kinda moving from school to school. These kids have stuck together and played a lot of basketball together.”

Dalebout is fresh off her 13th consecutive winning season at Fremont and her eighth to break 20 or more wins since beginning her career at Weber in 2003.

Fremont retains both its leading scorers, with juniors Abigail Christensen (16.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.6 apg) and Olivia Surrage (7.7 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.5 apg) each available at the three spot or the wing.

Returning juniors Mia McArthur (3.6 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.9 apg) and Daphnie Moyes (1.0 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 0.6 apg) will compete with juniors Brynn Wadman, Mia Smith and Jersie Slater as well as freshman Ellie McArthur for minutes up top.

Senior combo forward Lily Hall (4.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 0.8 bpg) is dealing with a short-term injury but is expected to return to the team soon, Dalebout said. Luckily for the Silverwolves, senior Maya Jensen (3.9 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 0.7 bpg) returns experience at the four and five spots from 25 appearances last year.

“We feel really deep,” Dalebout said. “Normally, I don’t like playing past seven or eight (players), but we’re going to play past seven and eight and have more bodies on the floor.”

After Thursday’s opener at Payson, Fremont returns home to begin its home slate with two tall tests against former region foe Davis on Nov. 25 and defending Region 5 champion Bountiful just a week later on Dec. 2.

December includes a two-day tournament at Corner Canyon, followed by four more nonregion dates (including Weber on Dec. 11) before opening the region schedule against Roy at home on Jan. 30.

“We’ve played with these girls since we were in the fourth grade,” Dalebout said of Region 5. “It will be competitive. It will be fun. I think our preseason is really, nicely competitive, and we’re gonna have some tough challenges really early on from the beginning.”

Fremont’s starting five is far from concrete, and the nonregion slate is no less forgiving as Dalebout hopes to disseminate minutes efficiently across a bench full of potential.

“You want to feed everybody the amount of time, minutes and touches they deserve,” Dalebout said. “But sometimes, you’re not going to be able to do that. If they can stay together and play as a team, they’re going to be really special.”
