Syracuse High's Colton Hoenigman pushes ahead of the pack in a game against Fremont on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025, in Syracuse.

SYRACUSE — Syracuse High boys basketball teammates Colton Hoenigman and Carter Robinson dealt with first-game nerves differently but, in the end, their results were similar.

The duo and the rest of the Titans captured a tense, back-and-forth, 60-57 nonregion victory over Fremont on Wednesday night in the season opener for both schools.

Hoenigman scored 28 points, including 15 in the first half, while Robinson checked in at 22 with 19 of those coming after the break.

“As soon as I got that first bucket, I knew something was going to click. I felt the first-game jitters go away. … I felt more confident compared to last year,” Hoenigman said. “Our team doesn’t care who scores; we’re excited for each other. It’s great to score and see my teammates happy for me.”

At 6-foot-7, Robinson finally got untracked midway through the third quarter and scored all 19 of his second-half total over the last 12 minutes.

“I had first-game jitters; I wasn’t putting myself in good position for my teammates to enter me the ball,” Robinson said. “In the second half, they looked for me more; I posted up harder and they got me the ball.”

He scored his only points in the first half in the closing 1 minute, 25 seconds of the second quarter before the Titans made an adjustment during intermission.

“Coach said, ‘Look for our big guy,’ and we did exactly that. I knew I wasn’t scoring, but I had to control my ego,” Robinson said. “I’m not scoring that much, so I’ve got to get the ball to my guy Colt. He tore it up in the first half; the whole game, actually.”

Hoenigman had 11 of his 15 first-half points in the first quarter but the Titans trailed 31-25 at the break as Fremont held control.

“I thought we played with great energy. We settled in and played some good defense in the second quarter and got some separation,” Fremont coach Corey Melaney said. “We got in a little foul trouble; we needed six fouls instead of five.”

Fremont High's Owen Hibbert (35) challenges Syracuse High's Carter Robinson on a Robinson shot attempt in a game Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025, in Syracuse.

Two quick baskets by Hoenigman to open the third quarter helped close the gap to 33-31, then Robinson took over, tallying the Titans next 10 points carrying over to early in the fourth frame.

“We came out of the locker room with the mindset to get the ball to Carter. He is an amazing player. We all want him to succeed,” Hoenigman said. “We knew there wasn’t any guys who could guard him. He singlehandedly took over that third quarter.”

Fremont still led 48-45 on a free throw by Zach Hancock with 3:40 remaining in the fourth quarter, but he fouled out 13 seconds later, with Hoenigman splashing home the ensuing free throws, making it 48-47.

The game was tied or the lead changed hands eight times in the next three minutes before a Robinson free throw with 30.2 seconds left gave the Titans a 56-55 edge they held to the end.

Robinson converted 5 of 5 free throws over the last 2:58 of the game and shot 12 of 16 overall after missing three in the first half.

Fremont High's Krew Hannum (11) shoots over Syracuse's Nakoy Daw (35) in a game Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025, in Syracuse.

“The big guy (Robinson) was a load for us, and was a problem. He got more touches and they were a little more patient in the second half,” Melaney said. “(Hoenigman) didn’t surprise us. I remember him from last year. He had a good game.”

Hoenigman made six free throws in the fourth quarter and buried 10 of 10 from the charity stripe for the game.

“I made a goal this year and told my coaching staff that I wanted to go 100% all year; don’t miss any free throws. If I miss some of my free throws today, we lose this game,” Hoenigman said. “These are super important to me and I’m working as hard as I can on that aspect because those little things in basketball do matter — and that helped us get the win.”

Cam Campbell led a balanced Silverwolves attack with 19 points, including three 3s. Easton Hansen had 16 points on a trio of 3-pointers and Hancock added 11 points.
