PLEASANT VIEW — Weber girls soccer is proving itself a program capable of forcing another’s hand, and doing so with impeccable timing as a contentious postseason nears.

Led in goal by senior captain Kallie Wallace, Weber stripped Region 1 champion Syracuse of an unblemished region record in a 5-4 penalty kick shootout victory, following a 1-1 regulation and extra time, in Tuesday’s regular-season finale.

After tying the match 1-all in the second half, Weber junior Carly Gardenhour outwitted Syracuse senior goalkeeper Erin Bott with the game-winner in penalty kicks.

A called-back goal by Weber senior forward Katelyn Spencer nearly put the Warriors (10-8, 4-4 Region 1) in victory formation with 5 minutes left in regulation. The close-range play, which saw Spencer collide with Bott midshot, saw the goal reversed and the score remain 1 apiece.

Two 10-minute overtimes featured three crucial saves by Wallace, collecting two in the second overtime period after limiting Syracuse (15-3, 7-1) from switching the field for nearly 4 minutes. Weber didn’t seize its opportunities, but neither did the Titans — setting up what Weber’s captain lives and breathes whenever she laces up for a match: a shootout.

“I feed off the adrenaline and the energy,” Wallace said. “That’s what I love and that’s what I look for. (Penalty kicks) are my favorite thing in the world. I’ll say it every time, but I think that was the best one.”

Weber went 5 for 5 from the penalty marker, and Wallace’s opening stop made the difference despite four consecutive makes by the Titans.

Fittingly, Gardenhour drilled home the final shot on behalf of Weber’s defense, staving off a Syracuse team that ranked No. 2 in the state and averaged 2.9 goals per match entering Tuesday’s contest. But the junior defender didn’t limit herself to Weber’s back line.

Syracuse struck first on a goal by senior forward Taylee Hughes, assisted by junior Jocee Eddy, early in the second half after a scoreless 40 minutes in the first. Gardenhour made her best placekicker audition with a 25-yarder, evening the scoreboard with 19 minutes to go.

“We really worked on our creative forward attacking, and I feel like it helped us so much with getting them behind and scoring lots of goals and just working on finishing in general,” Gardenhour said. “My teammates always tell me to just shoot it, and I saw my opportunity.”

Those opportunities kept coming, but when Spencer’s near game-winner fell off the board, the same five-time shutout Weber defense recommitted themselves to the cause, Wallace said.

“We lost one of our best defenders last year and we figured out how to replace her, and I think they’re doing insanely well,” Wallace said. “I can’t thank them enough for what they’ve done. The five shutouts we’ve had is all them.”

Even with a loss to end the regular season, Syracuse remains poised for a first-round bye in the 6A state tournament. Titans coach Jason Steiner knows the road forward means 4-0, and that another loss would be much less forgiving than the one handed down Tuesday night.

“The keepers were huge tonight; they kept both teams in the game,” Steiner said. “We both had our chances, and the shootout is anything that happens. It is what it is, and I would tell you I’d rather lose that one than one of the next four. Obviously, we want to go in with the momentum, but that’s our region, too. We’ve all beat up on each other and it shows how tough our region is.”

Third in the final region standings, Weber is also well-positioned for a first-round bye in the imminent playoff. Home or away to begin the postseason, Wallace said Weber’s message only grows louder with a quality home win to end the regular season.

“We’ve been encouraging the mindset that we can actually go places,” Wallace said. “Weber’s always been a team that can battle through anyone, and we just expect other teams not to think that, so we want to bring it to them.”
