State boys golf: Herzog, Luna land top-10 finishes; West Field 3rd as team
Top results and notes from the 6A and 5A state boys golf tournaments

West Field's Mack Herzog in action during a 2025 regular-season tournament.Four Northern Utahns swung into the top 10 during the final rounds of the 6A and 5A state boys golf championships, concluding in Utah County on Tuesday.
West Field sophomore Mack Herzog, shooting 5-under (139) for a share of fifth place, came the closest to 5A co-champions in Olympus’ Will Pedersen and Skyline’s Austin Shelley, each drawing 11-under (133) for a share of the individual championship, during the final round of action on Tuesday at TalonsCove Golf Course in Saratoga Springs.
Herzog, tying Timpview’s Calvin Lillywhite for fifth individually during his second career trip to state, and junior Ethan Luna, finishing two strokes higher at 3-under (141) in eighth place, boosted West Field’s third-place team finish (591) as the only top-10 combo of any area squad.
Bonneville, Box Elder, and Roy were all represented in the top 25 despite not qualifying for a team score. Bees senior Kanyon DeRyke shot 4-under (140) for seventh place, Lakers senior Josh Wallis shot 4-over (148) for a share of 18th place, and Royals senior Jesse Jones shot 5-over (149) for a share of 22nd place.
Leading Fremont’s seventh-place tie with Viewmont, senior Luke Hadley shot the best of the Silverwolves with 3-over (147) in a three-way tie for 15th place individually. Fremont freshman Luke Manning finished 5-over (149) for a share of 22nd place with Jones in his state debut.
Northridge senior Jake Williams led the 10th-place Knights with a team-low 7-over (151), tying Maple Mountain’s Caden Gillette for 29th individually.
In 6A, Farmington senior and Utah Tech commit Jack Summerhays finished 5-under (139) and seven strokes off the state champion, Lone Peak’s Blake Brown (12-under 132), in a three-way tie for fifth with Corner Canyon duo Tyse Boman and Ben Wilson.
Layton junior Madden Barnes, shooting 3-over (141) on the week, slid into another three-way tie for 10th place with American Fork’s Jack Davis and Lehi’s Crue Howard. Davis freshman Jackson Gross tied Lone Peak’s Austin Jones for 13th at 1-over (143).
Weber junior Austin Bybee and sophomore Hayes Torgesen each shot 3-over (147) in splitting 21st place. That led the Warriors’ seventh-place team score of 600, one stroke higher than sixth-place Farmington on the final day of play.
Farmington (6th), Weber (7th), and Layton (8th) collectively shot within three strokes or fewer of one another during the final round Tuesday.
