TAYLOR — Syracuse senior Erin Bott is only two matches into her final postseason run as the No. 2 Titans’ starting goalkeeper, and she’s written a bit of history for herself.
The school’s single-season shutout record now belongs to Bott, adding her ninth of the season on Thursday, in Syracuse’s 2-0 romp past No. 10 Corner Canyon in the 6A state quarterfinals.
The Titans (17-3), fresh off the program’s first region title since 2014, are headed back to Herriman and the state semifinals for a Region 1 rematch with No. 11 Davis at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Zions Bank Stadium.
Corner Canyon (10-8) represented one of just three regular-season losses for Syracuse, which dropped an August road trip 4-2 to the Chargers before an 11-1 run through to a region title. The Titans flipped the tables Thursday by reducing CC’s goal allowance to zero for a second consecutive match after shutting out No. 15 Cedar Valley 2-0 on Tuesday.
“It’s super exciting — to get two is a big deal,” Bott said. “I think that our defensive line is really fast. We can play an entire game and not get tired. We’ve got multiple players back there we can (substitute) and I trust them very much.”
Thursday’s quarterfinal arguably would’ve carried just as much heat had it been against No. 7 Weber, who fell to Corner Canyon 1-0 at home on Tuesday. But Syracuse coach Jason Steiner challenged his team — specifically his five captains — all the same.
“We knew it was going to be good,” Steiner said. “We’re 11-1 since we lost to (Corner Canyon), and they’re 4-6. We were the confident ones, and they came and showed it. … I think everyone’s buying into the team mentality; they come out and play for each other.”
Senior forward Taylee Hughes took full advantage of Syracuse’s first corner kick, coming just 4 minutes into the match, and gave the home team a 1-0 lead at the jump. Bott denied repeat shots by Chargers player Alexis Glutz late in the first half to preserve the momentum.
Playing back during the first half, senior forward Indy Heap returned up top for another Syracuse goal. It came together on a well-timed pass from freshman Taylor Henley with 29 minutes still to play in the second half.
Bott thwarted a free kick by CC senior Xandi Feroah hardly a minute later and both sides collected multiple yellow cards in the second half. From physical plays on the ball to extended discourse along the sidelines, Syracuse sustained its healthy lead through another wet half.
“The first half was super fast, there was a lot of energy and I was trying to get us to settle down and find our passes,” Bott said. “The second half, that energy turned negative. The refs and coaches got involved (and) made it drag on.”
The state semifinals are set; on the other side of the bracket, No. 1 Lone Peak faces No. 4 Mountain Ridge in the 2 p.m. semifinal before Syracuse and Davis take the field at 4:30 p.m.
Steiner and a confident Syracuse are now tasked with curbing upset-driven Davis. The 10-7 Darts finished the regular season dropping five of their last six matches, but have now shut out No. 6 Lehi and No. 3 Farmington on the road to join the field of four.
“We’ve kind of figured out what we need to do on the back end,” Steiner said. “(Corner Canyon)’s a good team and they’re dangerous. We got smoked by them the first time, by their wings. They’re super fast, super aggressive and very technical players. It was a challenge for our defense, and I challenged them to return it.”
BOX ELDER’S RUN ENDS IN PKs
Spanish Fork issued a Region 5 side a bitter defeat in a penalty kick shootout for the second time this week, defeating Box Elder 5-4 in kicks after a 0-0 knot through regulation and extra time Thursday in Utah County, sending SF to the 5A state semifinals.
The No. 3 Dons got past No. 14 Bonneville in kicks Tuesday after a 1-1 score. Thursday, No. 11 Box Elder saw its Cinderella run come to an end by one kick; the Bees blasted No. 22 West Jordan and No. 6 Hillcrest by a combined 15-0 to reach Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Box Elder finishes the season with a 13-7 record.
