OGDEN — An indelible season by Ogden High junior forward Elle Weston now includes the school’s new single-season scoring record of 38 goals, and perhaps a few more to come.
Weston cashed in a hat trick before the end of the first half in an 8-1 romp over No. 9 Morgan, the defending 3A state champion, in the quarterfinal round of the 3A state girls soccer playoffs on Saturday at Spence Eccles Ogden Community Sports Complex.
Weston’s newfound record, previously held by Colorado College freshman and 2024 All-Area Player of the Year Kate Pulley with 35 goals in her senior season, was bulletin-board material dating back to the beginning of the season in August.
“At the beginning of the season, me and (coach Alexis King) had a talk, and our goal was for me to beat it,” Weston said. “Obviously, Kate’s an amazing player and it was really hard, but I kind of got in my head a little bit at the end, so I wasn’t really allowed to know. When I came off the field, King let me know and I’m really excited.”
For a second time this season, Ogden (15-2) hung eight goals on Morgan (5-12) in their third consecutive win in the series since last year’s 2-1 loss to the Trojans in the state final.
Region 12 champion Ogden (15-2) meets No. 4 Grantsville on Thursday, Oct. 23, for the 2 p.m. semifinal matchup at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman. No. 2 Carbon and No. 3 Manti will decide the other half of the state championship immediately after.
Senior Megan Beus put the Tigers on the scoreboard right away with a header off junior Seren Gee’s corner kick just a couple minutes in. Sophomore Ryleigh Thomas made it a 2-0 lead a few moments later from 20 yards out, and Weston piled on three more goals before the break to give Ogden a commanding 5-0 halftime advantage.
Ogden did so without sophomore Finley Gee — the younger sister to Seren Gee — who suffered a season-ending injury during practice Monday. Weston said losing the younger Gee came as an unexpected test, and one they took to heart in Saturday’s quarterfinal.
“I think this game was pretty special to us,” Weston said. “It was really sad, so we came into game knowing that we’re playing for Finley and that we’re going to play our guts out because we don’t know what the outcome’s going to be. … We came very prepared.”
Like she did in the first, Beus added the first goal of the second half for a 6-nil Tiger lead less than 2 minutes after returning to the pitch. Beus’ younger sister, sophomore Madison Beus, picked up a seventh goal for Ogden, eyeing a goal-rule victory.
Morgan freshman Whimpey Monea prevented the shutout with the only goal to evade Ogden freshman goalkeeper Whitney Fife through 80 minutes. Ogden freshman Paisley Pierce tacked on an eighth goal for the Tigers to close the book on Saturday’s match.
ST. JOSEPH 5, GRAND COUNTY 1
OGDEN — Sofia Evans added a hat trick to her Utah all-classifications best scoring mark, now up to 55 goals, as No. 2 St. Joseph Catholic cruised past No. 7 Grand County (14-5) on Saturday and into the 2A state semifinals.
Ari Bond scored twice for St. Joseph (12-4). Evans also had two assists. Addison Doebler made seven saves in goal.
