HERRIMAN — For a seventh consecutive season, Ogden High’s girls soccer program is headed to Sandy for the state championship match at America First Field.

The top-seeded Tigers, rolling over No. 4 Grantsville 7-1 in the 3A state semifinals on Thursday, bumped their goal differential to a whopping 90-13 this season. Sophomore Bryleigh Thomas had Ogden on the scoreboard in as a little as 9 minutes, and all bets were off.

Strike first and strike often: It’s been a theme of sorts for the Tigers (16-2).

It’s back-to-back state title appearances under Ogden coach Alexis King, who nearly led the program to an eighth state title during her Utah coaching debut a year ago.

“I think we’re really prepared,” King said. “This season, we’ve been working a lot on our team chemistry, composure, game management and really just connecting as a team off the field. I think that shows on the field, as a team.”

After the opening goal by Thomas, Ogden tripped the floodgates.

Senior Megan Beus caddied three separate first-half Ogden goals — one by the school’s single-season scoring leader Elle Weston and two more by freshman Gwenyth Aardema — for a 4-0 lead midway through the opening half.

The Cowboys (12-7) joined the scoreboard via sophomore Kamry Allen before halftime to prevent a shutout.

“The first 5 minutes are fun — you just want to go out and just do anything you can,” Aardema said. “I feel like it’s not as much scary as it is get your toe in and have a good time.”

Weston provided the Tigers with a 5-1 lead, and the team’s second brace of the contest, just 7 minutes into the second half. Two more freshmen, Paislee Pierce and Madison Beus, joined the box score for a 7-1 lead late in the contest.

The younger Beus, a week removed from her last goal against Morgan in the quarterfinals, nearly recorded a third separate brace for the Tigers but officials ultimately reversed her last score after a brief review.

It’s been a rather profitable postseason for Ogden’s freshmen, Aardema said.

“Our freshmen have stepped up and not worried about what our age is,” Aardema said. “It’s worked really well, and I feel like we’re all learning together. Us learning from each other is making it easy and we’re all best friends on this team.”

Ogden now claims two region series against Grantsville and Morgan following Thursday’s win. King specifically praised Cowboys coach Stephen Duggan and his staff on their job this season.

“I think Grantsville has some great coaches,” King said. “We knew coming into this game, they were going to work hard and really want it, so we not only had to match that energy but we had to want it more than they do. Before state, both times we played them, they came out hard and you could tell they really want to win and they have that passion at heart to win a game.”

The Tigers meet either No. 2 Carbon (18-2) or No. 3 Manti (13-4) in the final; those two contested Thursday’s last semifinal. Kickoff for the 3A final is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday at America First Field.
