Prep playoff roundup: Big-play Northridge claims football win; Ogden advances

PLEASANT GROVE — No. 17 Northridge High football gave up a rushing touchdown to No. 16 Pleasant Grove (4-7) midway through the first quarter, then responded with 21 unanswered points for a 21-7 road win in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs Friday night.

After the Pleasant Grove touchdown, Dontae Dyson returned the kickoff 95 yards for Northridge (5-5) to tie the game. With 10:59 left in the third quarter, Grant Slater tossed a screen pass to Dyson, who turned it into a 73-yard, go-ahead touchdown.

The Knights sealed the deal when Andrew Ortiz took a Slater screen pass 95 yards to paydirt.

Northridge advances to play at No. 1 West (9-1) on Friday, Oct. 31.

OGDEN 14, CANYON VIEW 12

CEDAR CITY — No. 9 Ogden took a 14-10 lead on two rushing touchdowns, then held off No. 8 Canyon View (5-6) for a road win in the first round of the 3A playoffs.

The Tigers (7-4) advance to meet No 1. Cedar (10-0) in the quarterfinals on Friday, Oct. 31.

ALTA 49, ROY 7

SANDY — No. 18 Roy fell behind No. 15 Alta (4-7) by a 28-0 score before Rock Speredon tossed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Gunner Pearson with 5:16 left in the first half for a road loss in the 5A first round. The Royals end the year with a 3-7 record.

BOUNTIFUL 56, CLEARFIELD 6

BOUNTIFUL — Landon Hittle scored on a 4-yard run with 2:11 left in the third quarter but No. 24 Clearfield fell at No. 9 Bountiful (6-5) in the 5A first round. The Falcons finish the season with a 3-8 mark.

TIMPANOGOS 41, BEAR RIVER 14

OREM — Dalton Williams passed for two touchdowns but No. 18 Bear River fell at No. 15 Timpanogos (4-6) in the 4A first round.

On third-and-goal from 26-yard line, Williams connected with Eli Braegger to get Bear River (3-8) on the board. With 1:38 left in the game, Williams tossed the ball to Glaiden Behrens, who tip-toed down the sideline and into the end zone for the final margin.

JUAB 65, BEN LOMOND 14

NEPHI — No. 13 Ben Lomond scored two second-half touchdowns after trailing 52-0 at the break and fell in a 3A first-round loss at No. 4 Juab (8-3).

Tristan Jessop tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Rivera to get Ben Lomond (0-10) on the board. Jaylen Milton’s 2-yard rushing touchdown capped the scoring.

WATER CANYON 22, ST. JOSEPH 12

OGDEN — No. 8 St. Joseph dropped a low-scoring affair at home to No. 9 Water Canyon (3-7) in the first round of the 1A 8-Player playoffs. The Jayhawks end the year with a 4-6 record.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

WEST FIELD 3, CYPRUS 0

TAYLOR — No. 10 West Field swept No. 23 Cyprus (11-18) by scores of 25-18, 25-23, 25-10.

Kalli Bremser led West Field (18-11) with seven kills and five aces. Ainsley Schiffman tallied six kills, two aces and 17 digs. Jorie Schiffman served four aces and added 13 digs and two assists.

West Field advances to face No. 7 West (19-11) in the 5A second round at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at UVU.

Northridge 3, Roy 1 (no set scores)

Alta 3, Clearfield 2: 25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 19-25, 15-12

Olympus 3, Box Elder 2: 23-25, 21-25, 25-17, 27-25, 15-10

Northridge will face No. 6 Bountiful at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, in the second round at UVU.

St. Joseph 3, Tintic 0: 25-22, 25-20, 25-15
