PLEASANT VIEW — Layton and Weber head girls soccer coaches Tara Ferrin and Heather Carter are on the same page when it comes to penalty kicks.
Both coaches entered Thursday’s Region 1 opener expecting a match worth more than the standard 80 minutes, and both programs got just that.
Goals by Layton senior forward Anna Ward, coming with 10 minutes to go in the first half, and Weber senior forward Sadie Fletcher, hitting the net 13 minutes into the second half, shaped a 1-1 finish that favored the Warriors in a 4-3 shootout on Thursday.
Typically found on the wing of Weber’s back line, junior Carly Gardenhour delivered the game-winner in a dicey shootout featuring both of Layton’s goalkeepers — junior Quincy Reisbeck and freshman Kate Stone — as both teams lined themselves across midfield for the spectacle.
“You can’t have ties, right?” Ferrin said. “We know, with our region, that every team is going to be a competition, so we take PKs every day in practice to prepare for it. It’s a daily occurrence.”
Layton (6-4) entered the match fresh off a penalty-kicks win, defeating Lone Peak at home 2-2 last week. Back home, Weber (7-4) gambled with a fourth consecutive loss following a 0-3 road stretch with losses at American Fork (2-0), Lone Peak (4-0) and Ogden (2-1).
Despite numerous chances by Layton forwards Ward, Lizzie Tate and Calli Holje, Weber trailed just 1-0 at halftime after Ward put back a missed Holje attempt shortly before the break.
Fletcher evened the score 1-1 shortly after returning from halftime and nearly found a second goal, beaming off the right post with 12 minutes left in regulation. Reisbeck later saved a Fletcher free kick with just 5 minutes to go.
“(Fletcher)’s a strong forward, and we do often look to her to play those balls,” Carter said. “She can move the ball really well at her feet so she’s become one we really look to (and) attack with.”
Carter continued:
“We ended up playing a little more direct than we usually do,” Carter said. “It helped us get a goal to tie it up, but it didn’t quite give us much more. I think there’s still a little more dynamic work we need for our attack.”
Through it all, Weber keeper Kallie Wallace produced 60 goalless minutes between the second half and both overtime periods, holding on by a single shot in the shootout for Gardenhour’s game-winner.
The senior keeper can recall four separate shootouts during her sophomore season, and another as a junior, but Thursday likely ranks above all of them, she said. Weber’s starter highlighted the contributions of her senior centerbacks, Isabelle Ririe and Jaci Coles, as well.
“They’re one of the best back lines I’ve ever played with and I can’t thank them enough for what they do for me,” Wallace said.
Layton and Weber each enjoy lengthy breaks before their second region match of the season, both coming against Farmington. Layton hosts the Phoenix on Tuesday, Sept. 9, and the Warriors hit the road again on Friday, Sept. 12.
