ROY — Senior captain Page McCormick is listed as ‘D’ for defender on the Fremont High girls soccer roster.
On Thursday, ‘D’ designated something different — destroyer — in a Region 5 match at Roy.
McCormick tallied a hat trick and the Silverwolves dominated the Royals 6-1 for their second straight road victory.
“(Coach Heath) Madsen has been kind of moving me around because I feel like I’m a pretty good player everywhere on the field. He put me up top today and I got lucky,” McCormick said. “I played defense a lot last year, but this year more midfield.”
She got Fremont in the scoring column with a goal in the ninth minute on a pass from Arizeth Reyes.
Six minutes later, McCormick netted again, besting Roy keeper Alexis Beene in a one-on-one, breakaway goal.
“I’m just trying to keep it on the ground, a simple pass to the goal, because she’s coming out on me. Trying to get it around her; make sure I didn’t kick it out of bounds,” McCormick said.
So, two goals in the first 16 minutes helped quell the butterflies McCormick felt at the beginning of the match.
“I was a little nervous going into it. We started out strong. … Be aggressive, bring it on and do our thing,” McCormick said. “Being a captain is a big part of getting the team hyped up and making them feel better about the whole game.”
Things stayed status quo until the Silverwolves (4-6, 2-3 Region 5) lit up the scoreboard twice, 1 minute and 19 seconds apart, to close the first half.
Kemma Nunn knocked in a corner kick in the 30th minute and Jerzee Watson quickly followed with a header on a through ball, assisted by Carrera Taylor. Fremont led 4-0 at the half.
“That was crazy. Kemma’s goal from a corner was good, and another one right after was insane,” McCormick said. “We practice crosses a lot in our warmups … watched film and worked on it in practice; getting up the field fast and combining at the top.”
Katelyn Meyerhoffer’s header expanded the margin to 5-0 when Fremont scored on its second corner kick of the afternoon, thanks to the foot of McCormick.
“We practice corner kicks; pack it tight in the box. We have all of our girls huddled up and we have our ‘nine’ — who’s going to go to that spot and head it in, “McCormick said.
Roy (2-9, 0-6) struck the shutout when freshman Jenna Reed broke the ice in the 71st minute.
“Jordyn (Davies) took it down the line, crossed it, and then I shot it with my left foot,” Reed said. “It was so fun; sometimes we get a little down on ourselves. We need to be proud of what we do and stay positive for the entire game. Region gets tougher. It’s definitely a challenge.”
McCormick topped her hat trick shot in the 76th minute, in another battle with Beene and with a wide-open goal.
“I haven’t had one in a high school season. It felt so good. It pumps me up; I know I can do it,” McCormick said. “I can get those goals. It makes me feel a lot better.”
Kaitlyn Worthley started in goal for Fremont and Rubi Flores took over in the second half, where Reed’s score marred the clean sheet.
“In the second half, we were too comfortable with the lead and got scored on,” Flores said. “Our defense played good. Shoutout to Katelyn (Meyerhoffer); every time I think I’m going to have a one-v-one, she always comes out of nowhere and gets the ball.”
The Silverwolves leave the trail behind with four home games in the next two weeks.
“We’re playing well now; on our home turf, we’ll be even more confident,” McCormick said.
