Prep football roundup: Morgan tops Bountiful in battle of reigning state champs

BOUNTIFUL — In a battle of last season’s 3A and 5A state champs, Morgan High football outlasted Bountiful 21-13 for small-school pride on Friday night.

After spotting Bountiful a 7-0 lead, Kanyon Leonelli scored early in the second quarter on a 3-yard run for Morgan (2-1), and the game was tied 7-7 going into halftime.

Owen Gilson tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jack Hurd to put the Trojans up 14-7 at the midway mark of the third quarter. The Redhawks scored early in the fourth quarter but missed the PAT for a 14-13 deficit.

Morgan capped the scoring with an Owen Gilson 6-yard scoring strike to George Thurston with 9:23 left in the game.

BOX ELDER 7, NORTHRIDGE 3

BRIGHAM CITY — In a game where the end zones were lonely, Box Elder punched in the game’s lone touchdown for a fourth-quarter winner to defeat Northridge in a Region 5 opener.

Kadyn Reyes scored on a 1-yard plunge with 4:32 left in the game to put the Bees (4-0, 1-0 Region 5) ahead. Tytan Hupp booted the extra point for the final tally.

Ryker Horne opened the scoring for Northridge (0-3, 0-1) with a 30-yard field goal at the 1:10 mark of the first quarter.

DAVIS 59, ALTA 14

KAYSVILLE — Tradon Bessinger tossed four touchdown passes and the Davis defense scored twice in a big win over Alta.

Bessinger found Bode Sparrow for a 52-yard score with 11:38 left in the first quarter, and Davis (3-1) was off to the races. Tyson Baggett took a Bessinger pass 40 yards to the house, then Sparrow returned an interception 30 yards for a 21-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Makaio Byrd scored on a 4-yard scamper, then Isaac Morrison took a Bessinger pass 42 yards for a score, then Jaxton Itaaheau turned a Bessinger toss into a 29-yard touchdown. Luke Jolley kicked a 42-yard field goal as the half expired and the Darts led 45-6 at the break.

Johnny Parker returned a fumble 28 yards for a score early in the third quarter. Byrd capped the scoring on a 22-yard run with 11:45 left in the game.

Bessinger finished 11 of 13 for 279 yards and the four scores. Sparrow totaled three catches for 94 yards. Byrd rushed eight times for 95 yards. Parker led Davis with nine tackles and 2.5 sacks. The Darts’ defense totaled 10.5 tackles for loss.

RIGBY-ID 42, SYRACUSE 38

SYRACUSE — On fourth-and-goal from the Rigby (Idaho) 4-yard line, driving for the game-winning touchdown with less than 2 minutes left, Syracuse completed a short pass but fumbled away a chance to beat Idaho’s top-ranked team.

Skyler Orton blasted a 50-yard field goal to give Syracuse (3-1) a 3-0 lead. Ledger Wight threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Merrill. Wight connected with Parker Moffat for two scoring strikes in the third quarter: a 20-yarder and a 34-yarder.

After Rigby took the lead back, Wight snapped off a 75-yard touchdown run, giving the Titans a 38-35 lead with 48 seconds left in the third quarter.

COPPER HILLS 29, LAYTON 21

LAYTON — Copper Hills scored the game-winning touchdown with 12 seconds left to beat Layton.

Miles Neuteboom got Layton (2-2) on the board with a 28-yard field goal late in the first quarter. Preston DeWitt tossed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Mecham to cut the Copper Hills lead to 14-9.

Gavin Hurst scored on a 1-yard plunge and the Lancers trailed 21-16. Mecham scored on a pass from Lincoln Wilcox to give Layton a short-lived, 22-21 lead.

Wilcox completed 23 of 35 attempts for 235 yards, one touchdown and one interception, and rushed for 40 yards on five attempts. JP Garlick ran for 59 yards on 17 carries. Mecham had nine catches for 129 yards and two scores. Luke Byers had 16 tackles with two for loss.

SKY VIEW 62, BEAR RIVER 17

GARLAND — Eli Braegger scored two touchdowns as Bear River lost at home to Sky View (2-2, 1-0 Region 11).

Stone Higley kicked a 30-yard field goal to get Bear River (1-3, 0-1) on the board. Braegger hauled in a Jaxson Theurer pass for a 13-yard touchdown to make the score 27-10 with 2:07 left in the first half.

Braegger scored on a 3-yard scamper and the Bears trailed 55-17 with 7:52 left in the game. Bear River gave up seven touchdown passes of 24 yards or more.

SOUTH SUMMIT 48, BEN LOMOND 0

OGDEN — South Summit’s Ian Mair threw four touchdown passes in the first 15 minutes for a 35-0 lead and the visiting Wildcats (2-2) went on to a shutout win at Ben Lomond (0-3).

CLEARFIELD — Kambry Dalton netted all four goals to lead Bonneville to a road win at Clearfield and to possession of first place in Region 5.

Sophie White tallied two assists for Bonneville (7-3, 4-1 Region 5). Livia Byrne and Liliana Amarillo each assisted one score.

Emmery Johnson netted for Clearfield (4-5, 4-1) on a Kamryn Weaver assist.
