OGDEN — Ogden’s Anderson Curry and Max Wilson both mentioned positivity after their Tigers took down Clearfield 24-7 in a nonregion tussle on Friday.
Curry rushed for two short touchdown runs and passed out props all around.
“I couldn’t do it without my team. They’re amazing and so positive in the huddle,” Curry said. “I always feel like I have someone with me and protecting my back.”
The Tigers needed a good mental approach in a first half that saw a drive of 6:52 end in a blocked field goal and another drive of 8:46 stall at the Clearfield 9-yard line on downs.
Still, Ogden (3-1) entered halftime tied at 7-7 after giving up an early touchdown and scored 24 straight points to go on to victory.
When Clearfield’s Bryson Ridge blocked that field goal attempt, the Falcons only took two plays and 13 seconds before scoring on a 40-yard run by Sean Brant.
“They came out with something we weren’t familiar with, but luckily we were able to overcome it and figure it out,” Wilson said. “We just had to keep our energy and positivity up; make sure we’re with each other. We’re a family. It’s not an ‘I’ sport, it’s a ‘we’ sport.”
Whatever Ogden’s adjustment was, it worked because Clearfield (2-2) inexplicably did not go back to Brant the rest of the game.
After an exchange of punts, Ogden knotted the game at 7-7 on a four-play, 64-yard drive that only consumed 1:35 of clock time when Curry bulled in from 4 yards out as the first quarter hit zeroes.
“Everyone was happier, more excited, because after we got down, we now had a belief we were going to win the game,” Curry said. “We can come back from anything.”
While the first half may have been frustrating for the Tigers, they came out in the third quarter with fire on defense and clicking on offense.
Three consecutive Ogden drives began on the north side of the 50-yard line.
The result was an eight-play possession that ended with a 30-yard Jackson Turner field goal and Curry’s second touchdown, a 5-yard run, making it 17-7.
“Keep the pressure on them; mostly I think our defense played very well, keeping us hyped up and getting sacks so our offense was able to get on the field and run the ball,” Curry said. “We needed to put the game away by chewing the clock.”
Ogden’s third short drive in the third quarter led to a punt that it downed at the Clearfield 4-yard line.
One play later, Wilson intercepted Clearfield quarterback Brik Barlow’s pass and found paydirt on a pick-six with 10:33 remaining in the game for the final points.
“I’m glad I have great coaches that taught me how to read plays and how to see that and act on it,” Wilson said. “Realizing the routes and the combinations we’ve been going over since day one this week.
“It really helped to see the quarterback; see where he’s looking and what he’s deciding to do,” Wilson said.
Capping off a fantastic final frame, Wilson halted a 10-play Clearfield march with a sack midway through the period.
“My line did a stunt and opened a gap for me, and allowed me to make a play,” Wilson said.
Twenty-four straight points by 3A Ogden against 5A Clearfield left Curry feeling pretty good.
“I felt like we were unstoppable,” Curry said. “Everyone thought that Clearfield would beat us, but it doesn’t matter. We’re all teenagers, we’re all the same age and can compete with anyone. It was awesome.”
