OGDEN — Bryan Searle entered the week eager to see how the Morgan girls soccer team, in its 12th season under Searle’s command, would respond to an 8-0 shutout loss to Ogden, just as Ben Lomond entered Tuesday’s Region 13 kickoff hoping to start a tough slate with a win.
Searle’s Trojans boarded the bus home satisfied.
Morgan juniors Lily Evans and Kendall Peterson established a 3-0 lead on the Scots with a mere three seconds left in the first half, and the fireworks continued offensively Tuesday afternoon in a 6-1 Morgan region win and their first of the season on the road.
The Trojans (2-7, 1-1 Region 13) entered the week a bit healthier, but with an adjustment, moving Monea Whimpey from the midfield to the striker position, which arguably paid the biggest dividends on the day. The freshman tallied three assists up top, keying up three separate teammates.
“We’re trying to find the right position for each player,” Searle said.
Not out yet, the Scots (3-4) caught their breath for an answer by Evangaline Southworth, creating a 3-1 contest with the first goal of the second half. However, BL sophomore goalkeeper Camilla Arroyo would give up three more goals over the next 29 minutes.
Evans added her second goal of the match, and two more juniors, Amy Thomas and Saige Jones, bumped Morgan’s advantage well out of reach. Jones and freshman Maren Felix joined Whimpey in each recording a second-half assist.
To taste just their second win — the other coming 3-2 at Roy — Morgan finally sees some restitution, schedule-wise, after a 1-7 start.
“We’ve been going through it, but it felt good to finally take the (win),” Whimpey said. “I think Brian, he pushes us really hard but at the end of the day he tells us how good we did, and he’s really just our best friend.”
She continued:
“I think at the first part, we weren’t really connecting passes (and) just kind of moving the ball,” Whimpey said. “But I feel like our team chemistry has progressed a lot, and I feel like we’re doing a lot better.”
Morgan’s roster features just four seniors, but the region’s gauntlet schedule is hardly lost on a young team hoping to steer out of an unfortunate start. Historically, the Trojans are well-versed in its neighborhood trio — itself, BL and Ogden — bring to the table come postseason.
“We’ve won one game up until now and it’s been a bit of a struggle, but they’ve kept a positive attitude,” Searle said. “Even with a beatdown (last week), they stayed pretty positive, recognized how good they were and came out ready to train.”
The Trojans have another tune-up opportunity on Thursday at home when region foe Logan (1-5) comes in after a 3-2 home loss to Grantsville. Conversely, the Scots are pitted with 8-2 Ogden, currently on a five-match roll after shutting out Morgan on the road.
A home blowout certainly hurts, BL coach Sarah Espinoza noted postgame. Morgan is the Scots’ first opponent in 21 days, with the team’s last match, a 6-0 loss at Waterford, played Aug. 19.
Despite winning three of their last five matches, the Scots watched multiple preseason dates fall through the floor, including a contest with Layton Christian, a school unable to field a team this fall.
“It kind of hurts our squad because we haven’t had a game in two weeks,” Espinoza said. “Some of our preseason games dropped out, and I think that was hard coming off with a week or two in between a game against Morgan. We’re a little disappointed, but we’re going to shake it off.”
