Prep roundup: Morgan football outlasts Provo in overtime

MORGAN — Owen Gilson threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Kanyon Lionelli in overtime to lift Morgan High football to a hard-fought, 31-24 win over Provo in a late-night TV game Thursday.
Provo struck first when Justice Tela picked off the Morgan (4-1) quarterback and returned the interception 67 yards for a touchdown.
Two plays later, Gilson atoned for his interception by launching a pass over the Bulldog defense to Eli Mortensen, who turned the heave into an 83-yard touchdown.
Provo’s defense took over, holding the Trojans to two punts while blocking one, while also forcing a fumble and a turnover on downs. Spencer Shuman kicked a 37-yard field goal, Malik Filimoeatu scored on a 2-yard run and a 1-yard dive, and the Bulldogs led 24-7 at the half.
Whatever Morgan coach Jared Barlow told the Trojans at halftime worked, as Morgan held Provo scoreless the rest of the way.
Gilson scored on a 20-yard run midway through the third quarter, then George Thurston scored on a 2-yard scamper to make the score 24-21 with 1:41 left in the third quarter. Carter Goram made a 26-yard field goal to tie the game with 6:42 left in regulation.
The Trojans won the overtime coin toss and elected defense. After two Filimoeatu 3-yard rushes, Miles Sydenham slashed through the Bulldog offensive line and dropped Filimoeatu for a short gain, forcing a Provo field goal attempt. The Trojans got good pressure on Shuman, and his boot went wide right.
George Thurston gained 9 yards on first down, then Gillson scampered for 13 yards and a first-and-goal from the Provo 3. Two plays later, Gilson found Lionelli coming out of the backfield just short of the goal line, and Lionelli did the rest for the winning touchdown.
